The Data and Applied Sciences Research team leads the way in pioneering AI and machine learning innovations, specializing in deep learning, NLP, large language models (LLMs/GPT), complex AI systems, graph models, chatbots, etc.

Our research is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of technology, anticipating future needs, and seamlessly integrating AI innovations into our product suite. We aim to deliver groundbreaking solutions that not only address current demands but also establish the groundwork for transformative advancements in data and applied sciences.

We are looking for a Principal Research Scientist to lead innovative research initiatives, transitioning them from concept to product. In this role, you will collaborate with scientists, engineers, and designers across Microsoft Security AI Research, as well as with Microsoft product teams and Microsoft Research. You’ll have the chance to develop and train cutting-edge models, advancing existing approaches to applying LLMs for security use cases, particularly in deep security research through post-training techniques. Most importantly, you'll work closely with various developer product teams to design experiments, assess results, iterate, and enhance your AI projects at scale.

**Responsibilities**

We are seeking a Principal Research Scientist who is curious about the latest AI advancements and is willing to take on variety of challenges - from coding to model building, prompt engineering, building advanced agentic and other complex AI solutions - to join our dynamic team.

Responsibilities include:

+ Design, develop, and run advanced AI/ML experiments, models, and systems.

+ Initiate and advance research to advance state-of-the-art in AI for Security

+ Facilitate deployment of advanced AI solutions by designing and implementing infrastructure components

+ Collaborate across disciplines with product teams across Microsoft

+ Stay up to date with the research literature and product advances in AI for Security

**Qualifications**

**Required Qualifications:**

+ Doctorate in relevant field AND 3+ years relatedresearch experience

+ OR equivalent experience.

+ 2+ years of experience building and training foundation LLMs.

**Other Requirements:**

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

+ Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Research Sciences IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
