Job description

About Upstart

Upstart is the leading AI lending marketplace partnering with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit. By leveraging Upstart's AI marketplace, Upstart-powered banks and credit unions can have higher approval rates and lower loss rates across races, ages, and genders, while simultaneously delivering the exceptional digital-first lending experience their customers demand. More than 80% of borrowers are approved instantly, with zero documentation to upload.

Upstart is a digital-first company, which means that most Upstarters live and work anywhere in the United States. However, we also have offices in San Mateo, California; Columbus, Ohio; and Austin, Texas.

Most Upstarters join us because they connect with our mission of enabling access to effortless credit based on true risk. If you are energized by the impact you can make at Upstart, we’d love to hear from you!

The Team:

Upstart’s Financial Operations team is the backbone of our financial integrity, building the ledgers, close-automation, and cash-management systems that give executives real-time, audit-ready insight into the company’s performance. Innovating at the intersection of Capital Markets, Accounting, FP&A, Treasury, and Engineering, the team builds the foundational analytics and internal tooling needed to streamline deal execution and improve transparency. Financial Operations solutions play a critical role in shaping how we manage the balance sheet, execute securitization and capital transactions, and maintain a high-quality accounting close process.

As the Principal Product Manager, Financial Operations at Upstart, you will own the vision and roadmap for this FinOps platform end-to-end: replacing spreadsheet sprawl with append-only services, automated controls, and self-service planning tools that scale with our growth. You’ll orchestrate multiple engineering and stakeholder pods, drive SOX-compliant releases, and unlock day-zero visibility for Accounting, FP&A, and Treasury, so leadership can steer the business with speed and confidence.

How you’ll make an impact

  • Enable real-time, trustable financial visibility. Ship solutions that cut manual data prep and give FP&A and Treasury instant insight into cash, liquidity, and P&L drivers
  • Design and build scalable systems that automate core Treasury and Capital Markets workflows and unlock efficiency
  • Accelerate planning and forecasting cycles. Replace manual workflows with a self-service planning platform
  • Partner closely with engineering leadership to define the long-term vision and roadmap for reporting and analytics automation
  • Institutionalize data governance and audit readiness. Design event-sourced ledgers, evidence capture, and access controls
  • Define product strategy and roadmaps and launch features in partnership with engineering teams

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ yrs of end-to-end product ownership across mission-critical Financial Operations domains (GL, AP/AR, treasury, revenue recognition)
  • Experience leading initiatives at a Principal PM level
  • Proven track record orchestrating across engineering teams to replace manual workflows with real-time services
  • Executive-level influence and ability to consistently drive alignment on roadmap, risk trade-offs and control design
  • Customer-backed problem framing and discovery excellence. Experience with validation via rapid prototyping
  • BA/BS in Finance, Economics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Agile execution at scale. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain outcome-oriented backlogs, enforce crisp sprint goals, and drive continuous delivery without sacrificing quality or compliance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building financial tooling or working in capital markets, treasury, or fintech environments.
  • Has shipped at least one SOX-compliant, event-stream ledger or close-automation platform and operated with the full strategic autonomy
  • Passion for empowering non-technical teams through data and tooling.
