Job summary

Syngenta Group is seeking a Principal Process Chemist to lead a small team and deliver targets, applying extensive chemistry expertise to improve manufacturing processes.

Fluency in English is required; German and French are a plus. The role emphasizes HSE compliance, documentation, coaching staff, and coordinating with production, supply chain, and regulatory functions.

Qualifications

  • PhD in organic chemistry or equivalent experience.
  • Fluent English; German and French advantageous.
  • Experience in manufacturing support and process improvements.
  • Knowledge of scale-up of chemical processes.
  • Understanding of Syngenta stage plan, supply chain and R&D processes.
  • Typically 4–6 years’ experience as Process Chemistry Specialist or equivalent.
  • Experience collaborating with production and supply functions.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure HSE standards and good laboratory practices are applied.
  • Provide technical support to a manufacturing area; act as Chemistry Process Owner.
  • Maintain technical documentation under guidance.
  • Develop, train and coach junior staff.
  • Manage day-to-day priorities considering resources and strategies.
  • Communicate with manufacturing, development, supply chain, HSE and regulatory teams to implement development plans.
  • Manage stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
  • Engage with process technology centers to optimize skills use.
  • Support department in multiple specialist roles.

The Principal Process Chemist leads a small team of lab technicians or chemists to deliver targets and provides extensive specialist chemistry expertise as required to drive improvements to existing manufacturing processes for products, as defined by or agreed with a group or project leader.

Job Description
  • Ensures the required HSE standards and good laboratory practises are applied/respected.
  • Controls and coordinates the provision of technical support to a significant technology or manufacturing area. Acts as Chemistry Process Owner for a manufacturing process area and/or as a local expert in a specific technology. Applies a combination of theoretical and applied knowledge in order to guide and lead challenges in that area. Investigate, develop and implement solutions to the more intractable problems encountered.
  • Establishes and maintains technical documentation under guidance from a project or team leader.
  • Develop, train and coach junior staff or peers to improve their performance. Apply Performance Management rigorously where appropriate.
  • Manage/set day to day priorities in light of resource constraints and project/ supply chain/manufacturing strategies.
  • Communicate with, and influence, manufacturing, development, supply chain teams, HSE, regulatory and other functions in order to define, progress and implement development plans.
  • Manage day to day expectations of stakeholders, for example, task force/manufacturing support teams, site leadership teams, project managers, supply chain teams.
  • Establish and maintain contact with centres of process technology expertise, both within Syngenta and externally, to ensure optimum use of available skills and resources. Take part in formal networks in areas of expertise.
  • Supports the department in multiple specialist roles
Qualifications
  • PhD in organic chemistry or equivalent experience
  • Fluent English. German and French advantageous.
  • Basics partnering and problem-solving skills.
  • Track record in manufacturing support, process improvements and knowledge in scale-up of chemical processes.
  • Good general knowledge about Syngenta stage plan, Supply Chain strategy, R&D and P&S processes, teams, roles and responsibilities.
    (or equivalent experience with another company)
  • Typically, 4 – 6 years’ experience as Process Chemistry Specialist, or equivalent, with practical experience in manufacturing support, process improvement and development, showing sound and broad knowledge in process safety, reaction hazards, electrostatics, environmental issues and IP.
  • Typically experience (e.g. job rotation) within a partnering function such as production and supply
