Job summary

Thales Defense & Security, Inc. in Clarksburg, MD is seeking a Principal PCB Designer to lead layered PCB layouts for high-speed digital and RF designs.

You will coordinate with Electrical and Mechanical designers, mentor junior staff, and ensure conformance to IPC and MIL-STD requirements. The role requires 12+ years of PCB design experience, proficiency in Cadence OrCAD and Altium, and DDR3/DDR4 expertise.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of electrical PCB layout experience including high speed digital busses.
• Firm understanding of IPC standards for Rigid and Rigid-Flex PCBs (IPC-6011, IPC-6012 CLASS 3, IPC-6013 CLASS 3, IPC-2221, IPC-7351, IPC-SM-840D CLASS 3).
• High-Speed Digital layout techniques (up to 25 GHz).
• Experience with DDR3 or DDR4 layouts.
• Proficiency with Cadence OrCAD PCB Designer and Altium Designer; Siemens Xpedition (Mentor DxDesigner) is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Layout and route rigid, flex, and rigid-flex PCBs with analog and digital circuits.
• Modify schematics and lead PCB design/layout activities.
• Create documentation to manufacture PCAs.
• Work with vendors to design stackups for HDI designs.
• Implement design rules in ECAD tools.
• Create and maintain component libraries; create new library components as needed.
• Provide guidance and mentoring to junior PCB designers.
• Interface to resolve PCB issues from fabrication; document resolutions.

We are excited to announce that we have an opening in our Clarksburg, MD office for a Principal PCB Designer. This role reports to the Electrical Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities

• Layout and route Rigid, Flex, and Rigid Flex PCB's that consist of analog and digital circuits and components.
• Modify electronic circuit schematics and lead PCB design/layout activities.
• Create documentation to manufacture printed wiring assemblies (PCAs).
• Work with Vendors to design Stackups for HDI designs.
• Implement Design rules into ECAD tools.
• Create and maintain Component Library as required.
• Create new library components as required for new designs.
• Provide technical guidance, support and mentoring to less experienced PCB Designers.
• Interface, resolve, and document PCB issues arising from board fabrication.
• Participate in continuous improvement and team building activities.
• Maintain productive working relationships with all team members.
• Complete assigned tasks in a quality and timely manner with minimal supervision.
• Effectively support and communicate to management status, issues, needs and ideas.

Qualifications

• U.S. Citizenship required. Applicants selected may be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
• ASEE or equivalent work experience.
• 12+ years of electrical PCB Layout design experience including high speed digital communications busses.
• Firm understanding of IPC standards for the production of Rigid and Rigid-Flex PCBs (IPC-6011, IPC-6012 CLASS 3, IPC-6013 CLASS 3, IPC-2221, IPC-7351, AND IPC-SM-840D CLASS 3).
• Firm understanding of High-Speed Digital layout techniques (up to 25 GHz).
• Must have recent Rigid-Flex layout experience.
• Must have recent DDR3 or DDR4 layout experience.
• Ability to start and complete complex PC designs per instruction by Electrical and Mechanical designers.
• Proficiency at designing both RF and digital designs.
• Expert user of current PCB design software including BOTH Cadence OrCAD PCB Designer and Altium Designer. Siemens Xpedition (Mentor DxDesigner) experience is a plus.
• CAD library administration including symbol, footprint generation and component parameter administration.
• Experience with HDI via structures.
• Familiarity with risk reducing PCB design techniques regarding EMC/EMI to meet military and aerospace standards.
• Ability to analyze a design to meet technical requirements.
• Ability to think "out-of-the-box" and develop innovative design concepts.
• Experience with DoD standards and practices (MIL-STD, ASTM, ANSI, etc.).
• Experience with Microsoft Office tools, such as MSExcel, MSWord, and Visio.
• Strong communication skills.

The annualized pay range for this role is $109,470- $139,879 along with a target incentive compensation plan (ICP) of 5%. The pay range provided is a good faith estimate representative of the experience level for the role described above.
