Job summary

The City of Temple, TX is seeking a Principal Planner to oversee complex planning work, organize short- and long-range studies, gather and analyze data, and prepare written reports. You will lead data-driven planning projects and support annexation efforts while coordinating with the Director.

You will present findings to the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council, interpret zoning ordinances, and guide staff in land use planning and growth management consistent with municipal codes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning or related field.
  • Five (5) years of municipal planning and zoning experience.
  • A Master’s degree in planning is preferred.
  • AICP Certification is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Determines data needs for complex planning studies and collects, analyzes, and evaluated the data.
  • Prepares reports, projects, and exhibits as needed.
  • Participates in preparation of long-range planning studies, corridor studies, Comprehensive Plan updates, and annexation studies.
  • Develops, organizes, and implements short range land use plan measure including rezoning of property, zoning variances, abandonments, dedications, encroachment licenses, and annexation in accordance with City of Temple ordinances and plans.
  • Assists Director in preparation for, and presentation to, the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.
  • Makes presentations to Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustment and other boards/groups as needed.
  • Interprets and prepares amendments to the City’s Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Ordinance and related Codes/Ordinances as needed.
  • Conducts plat and site plan reviews for new land development projects, including field work to evaluate existing land use conditions as needed.
  • Conducts reviews and makes recommendations for zoning requests.
  • Establishes and maintains communication with other agencies involved in planning activities which impact the City.
  • Maintains records of statistical data and supplies data as requested.
  • Follows City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Combination of education and experience equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in Planning or related field
  • Five (5) years of experience in municipal planning and zoning
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in planning
Certifications, Licenses and Registrations
  • AICP Certification
