If this sounds like you, The Montgomery County Department of Parks, Northern Parks Division, is the place you want to be! We are currently seeking experienced, dynamic, highly motivated team players to join us as a Principal Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker - CDL at Little Bennett Regional Park.

The Little Bennett Management Area contains 39 parks, including 1 Regional Park, 3 Recreational Parks, 2 Conservation Parks, a combination of over 40 miles of natural and hard surface trails, and 28 athletic fields. The area is also responsible for the inspection, repair, and surface maintenance of 36 playgrounds. Under general supervision of a Park/Facilities Maintenance Leader, the successful candidate will perform a variety of general park maintenance tasks such as playground repairs, grass mowing, trash removal, athletic field renovation and maintenance, trail maintenance, tree planting, pruning, and aftercare cleaning, and repairing park buildings and structures while working with and occasionally leading teams of career and/or seasonal employees. The ideal candidate should possess skills to operate trucks, tractors with attachments, large riding mowers, loaders, and forklifts. Trade skills in carpentry and painting are a plus.

What the Job will Involve:

  • Operation of mid-sized to large equipment to include large mowers, tractors with attachments, backhoe, loader, etc.
  • Operation of trucks, truck and trailer combinations, snowplows, dump trucks, trash trucks, etc.
  • Hauling heavy-duty tractors, skid steer or other large equipment using a trailer and CDL vehicles.
  • Occasional supervision of park maintenance employees performing general park maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs to playground equipment, carpentry, custodial, and preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Perform general maintenance to playgrounds, buildings, and grounds.
  • Responds to emergencies and inclement weather conditions such as hurricanes, blizzards, and earthquakes.
  • Athletic field maintenance includes operating tractor w/ attachment to rake, drag and grade fields. Also sprays pesticides.
  • Ability to work independently and be proficient in grounds maintenance as well as custodial services.
  • Maintain inventories of supplies and materials.
  • Performs stormwater facilities preventive maintenance according to the Department of Environment Protection standards.
  • Maintain bio-retention and rain garden facilities with balanced vegetation and free of weeds.

IMPORTANT WORKER CHARACTERISTICS:

  1. Considerable knowledge of work procedures, steps, tasks and techniques for standard (1) groundskeeping including turf and trail maintenance; (2) landscaping; (3) building maintenance; (4) safety techniques, procedures and requirements; (5) cleaning agents, procedures and equipment; (6) pesticide and fertilizer applications; (7) automobile and equipment maintenance; (8) basic methods and procedures for skilled trades support work (i.e., HVACR, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, painting, welding); and (9) Commission organization, policies and procedures.

*Knowledge is typically acquired or fully developed by on-the-job training in this job class.

  1. Skill and ability to (1) operate automotive and heavy power equipment including trucks, truck and trailer combinations, farm tractors with attachments, bucket trucks with attachments (plows, graders), trash trucks, dump trucks, tank trucks, bobcats, front-end loaders, tree spades, turf rollers, backhoes, dozers, and truck or vans with trailers; (2) apply pesticides and fertilizers requiring certification; (3) operate hand and power tools, chainsaws, and power saws, woodchippers, push and riding mowers, tractors with attachments, trucks or vans with trailers; (4) apply basic skilled trade practices safely and effectively; (5) operate various computerized software programs; (6) provide courteous service; and (7) perform First Aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED).
  2. Skill in problem solving to select, organize, and logically process relevant information (verbal, numerical, or abstract) to solve a problem. Examples include measuring dimensions for construction of flower beds; repairing picnic tables and fences; and selecting the appropriate attachments to rake, drag and grade athletic fields.
  3. Skill in communication to understand verbal and written information (including facts, descriptions and ideas) and to express such information so that others will understand. Examples include reading and writing routine reports and correspondence; understanding blueprints, plans, and diagrams; and explaining safety and work procedures to work crews.
  4. Interpersonal skills to interact effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships as a member of a team.

Working Conditions:

  • Incumbent primarily works outside with a combination of office work occasionally or as assigned.
  • Exposure to various elements and all types of weather conditions, waste, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g.: bees, hornets, wasps etc.).
  • Work requires constant kneeling, bending, twisting, lifting, and the ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds.
  • An essential employee required to be on-call 24 hours for any emergencies.
  • Must be available to work weekends and evenings as necessary.
  1. High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  2. Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.
  4. Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
  5. Pass Commission medical examination.
  6. Depending upon the area of assignment, some positions in this class require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including:
  • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment;
  • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Fertilizer Applicator certification; and
  • National Playground Safety Institute certification.
