The Naval & Oceanic Systems business unit headquartered in Annapolis, MD is seeking dependable individuals willing to work in a collaborative environment and that are interested in expanding their horizons.

This position is a dual role that encompasses materials and corrosion engineering as well as mechanical design and analysis. The core role will focus on materials engineering support for the Annapolis campus. Additional experience with mechanical design and analysis will support the primary role and provide tasking flexibility based on site demands.

Roles and Responsibilities

1. Applying principles of chemistry, physics, and material science to investigate material issues and provide solutions.
2. Applying corrosion mitigation methods across complex systems.
3. Analyzing and researching materials and their related application processes for use in engineering design.
4. Working in a team environment to perform detailed technical reviews of drawings, specifications, processes, and manufacturing plans.
5. Performing complex engineering design, development, analysis, and/or test activities to support assigned projects.
6. Applying engineering principles to adapt or improve upon heritage features from previous successful designs of a similar nature.
7. Making an extra effort to provide quality customer service. Constantly seeking new sources of information and providing information necessary to meet customer needs.
8. Managing test activities and test article fabrication, including documentation of results.
9. Interacting with senior customer personnel on significant technical matters, often requiring coordinated activity across organizational lines.

This requisition may be filled as either a Principal or Sr. Principal Systems Engineer.

Basic Qualifications for Principal Systems Engineer

1. Bachelor’s degree in STEM with 5 years of experience; OR a Master’s Degree in STEM with 3 years of experience; OR a PhD in STEM with 1 year of experience.
2. Basic understanding of the processes that produce corrosion (uniform, galvanic, crevice, etc) and the strategies that mitigate it.
3. Basic understanding of weld engineering, including processes, analyses, and non-destructive test methods.
4. Experience designing hardware and structures subjected to a marine environment.
5. Basic knowledge of metallurgical practices (e.g., weld, metallurgy, metallographic evaluation, heat treatments, fracture mechanics, corrosion control, and failure analysis).
6. US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI clearance.

Basic Qualifications for Senior Principal Systems Engineer

1. Bachelor’s degree in STEM with 8 years of experience; OR a Master’s Degree in STEM with 6 years of experience; OR a PhD in STEM with 4 years of experience.
2. Basic understanding of the processes that produce corrosion (uniform, galvanic, crevice, etc) and the strategies that mitigate it.
3. Basic understanding of weld engineering, including processes, analyses, and non-destructive test methods.
4. Experience designing hardware and structures subjected to a marine environment.
5. Basic knowledge of metallurgical practices (e.g., weld, metallurgy, metallographic evaluation, heat treatments, fracture mechanics, corrosion control, and failure analysis).
6. US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Familiarity with Navy / DoD processes and workflow.
2. Practical understanding of additive manufacturing modalities and alloys.
3. Experience designing hardware and structures subjected to long-term sea water submersion such as pressure vessels.
4. Basic knowledge of coating types and coating application methods used to prolong life of marine systems.
5. Active Top Secret/SCI clearance.

Salary Range

$105,400.00 - $158,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
