Job summary

American Electric Power seeks a Mechanical Engineer Principal SG9 to define mechanical design-basis expectations and support mechanical equipment procurement for gas, coal, and renewable projects. The role requires coordinating with AE and EPC teams and ensuring designs meet safety and regulatory standards.

You will assist in RFx engagements, vendor reviews, construction, commissioning, and lifecycle support across multiple power generation sites. Travel up to 25% may be required.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of related engineering experience with ABET degree.
• PE license preferred or ability to obtain.
• Experience with gas, coal, and renewable energy projects.
• Experience with simple and combined cycle plants and plant integration.
• Proficiency with CAD and engineering calculation tools.

Responsibilities

• Develop mechanical design basis for turbines, HRSGs, boilers, pumps, and structures.
• Review drawings, calculations, and specifications with AE and EPC teams.
• Prepare RFx documents and procurement specifications.
• Interface with OEMs on RFx, lead times, warranties, and submittals.
• Support vendor evaluation, bid reviews, and turbine/HRSG interfaces.
• Provide construction, commissioning, and startup support.
• Perform stress, vibration, thermal, piping, and fatigue analyses.
• Ensure compliance with ASME, API, ANSI, NFPA, IEEE and local codes.
