The ideal candidate will have design experience combined with applied manufacturing knowledge.

Role Description

As Principal Engineer – Design Transfer & Product Engineering on ConMed’s Foot & Ankle R&D Engineering team, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to apply manufacturing methods knowledge to transfer designs to production and lead global product engineering efforts. You will support new product introductions, continuous improvement, and product support, partnering with sourcing to develop supplier capabilities for manufacturing complex high-precision medical devices and components.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead projects ensuring all deadlines and deliverables are met, including product transfer, improvement projects, and cost initiatives
  • Collaborate with Marketing on product enhancements and design changes through change control processes
  • Support new product and process introductions, ensuring documentation aligns with Quality Management System procedures
  • Generate PFMEAs, control plans, inspection procedures, and support supplier quality for product launches
  • Research, design, develop, prototype, and refine solutions to complex clinical problems
  • Conduct design verification and validation activities to ensure safety, efficacy, and compliance
  • Perform process verification & validation, including vendor qualification and travel as needed
  • Create and refine engineering documentation in accordance with quality standards
  • Engage with suppliers to resolve manufacturing issues, ensuring quality and delivery objectives are met
  • Investigate and resolve product design issues through root-cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Support capital planning, equipment specification, and validation activities
  • Implement necessary process or design changes and analyze complex product design issues
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, mechanical, biomedical, or related field
  • 12 years of product development engineering experience with a bachelor’s, or 8 years with a master’s degree
  • Experience in Medical Devices, with mechanical design in a regulated industry, including various manufacturing methods
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in CAD, especially SolidWorks
  • Applied knowledge of manufacturing methods and materials for surgical devices
  • Experience in Orthopedics product development, especially Foot & Ankle
  • Understanding of GD&T, DFM, statistical tools, and validation techniques
  • Project management experience and validation of manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of MSA, Six Sigma, lean methodologies, and PPAP
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office and project management software
Additional Details

Expected travel: 0-30%. Must be willing to travel to Memphis, TN. Not eligible for visa sponsorship. Salary range: $130,654 to $209,980, based on experience and location.
