Job Description

L3Harris is seeking an experienced Principal, Mechanical Design Engineer to manage large, complex project initiatives. The selected individual will work independently and guide a team of mechanical engineers, providing technical direction that drives program success. Responsibilities include working closely with internal and external customers, leading design and documentation efforts, and supporting mechanical and electromechanical product development.

Essential Functions
  • Ability to create and guide the development of aerospace structure designs, including structure assemblies, component installations, and bracket designs that conform to requirements documents.
  • Assist in requirements verification of those designs.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with technical and non‑technical professionals at all levels.
  • Experience with aerospace flight vehicle design.
  • Research and analyze data such as customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
  • Research, plan, design, and provide guidance to other engineers for mechanical and electromechanical products and systems.
  • Analyze, design, and test products or systems such as instruments, controls, and mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems.
  • Serve as a GD&T SME for the organization.
  • Prepare conceptual models and design review materials, with understanding of mechanical analysis requirements and techniques used for initial sizing and design verification.
  • Plan and possibly direct engineering personnel in fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and develop methods and procedures for testing products or systems.
  • Perform peer reviews of fellow engineers’ designs and drawings.
  • May require occasional overtime.
  • Travel 20% (10–20%) as required to meet critical schedule milestones.
  • Obtain US security clearance.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 12 years of prior mechanical design engineering experience; or Graduate Degree and a minimum of 10 years of prior mechanical design engineering experience; or in lieu of a degree, minimum of 16 years of prior mechanical design engineering experience.
Preferred Additional Skills
  • 5+ years of experience with basic material selection, sheet metal design practices, basic machining practices and hardware selection.
  • Proficiency with PTC Creo 8.0 or later revision, especially with detail part design, large assembly management and drawing documentation.
  • Proficiency and experience with ASME Y14.5‑1994 and generating detailed documentation of parts, assemblies and installations.
  • Proficiency in non‑conforming material review of root cause/corrective action and disposition instructions.
  • Hands‑on engineering support of manufacturing.
  • Design of mechanical ground support equipment and handling procedures/methods.
  • Preparation of estimates for design tasks.
  • Prepare or lead the preparation of part lists.
  • Knowledge of engineering change document preparation and impact assessments.
