Job summary

Johnson & Johnson is looking for a Principal Machinist in Danvers, Massachusetts. This role focuses on operating 5-axis CNC equipment and supporting product development within our Cardiovascular team. The Principal Machinist will also mentor junior machinists and ensure adherence to high standards in machining and quality control.

The ideal candidate will have extensive CNC machining experience and a commitment to continuous process improvement.

Qualifications

Job description

We are searching for the best talent for Principal Machinist at Johnson & Johnson in Danvers, Massachusetts. This role is part of our Cardiovascular team, which develops leading solutions for heart recovery, electrophysiology, and stroke. The Principal Machinist will operate and program 5‑axis CNC equipment, mentor junior machinists, and collaborate with R&D, manufacturing, and fixture design teams to support the successful development and production of innovative products.

Key Responsibilities
  • CNC Machining: Operate, program, and set up 5‑axis CNC machines to produce high‑precision parts and components for manufacturing projects.
  • CAD/CAM Expertise: Use CAD and CAM software to create and optimize tool paths and program CNC machines for complex geometries and tight tolerances.
  • Welding & Equipment Experience: Familiarity with various welding techniques, heavy machines, and dynamic machine shop layouts.
  • Technical Skills: Comfortable working with electrical, test, mechanical, facility, or hydraulic systems, components, and equipment.
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance to junior machinists, helping develop their technical skills, knowledge in CNC machining, best practices, and safety protocols.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Work closely with engineers and technicians in R&D, manufacturing, and fixture design teams to ensure parts meet design specifications and manufacturing requirements.
  • Quality Control: Inspect finished parts for accuracy, quality, and conformance to specifications and drawings using precision measurement tools.
  • Process Improvement: Continuously assess machining processes for efficiency, effectiveness, and quality, suggesting and implementing improvements as necessary.
  • Training & Development: Assist in training new machinists, ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures, and promoting a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of machine setups, work orders, and tooling changes. Provide feedback on machining operations and suggest improvements based on lessons learned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years of machine shop experience in CNC machining, with at least 3+ years operating 5‑axis CNC equipment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in CNC programming and setup for 5‑axis machines.
  • Proficiency in machine shop equipment/technology and best practices: multi‑axis turning or grinding, welding, lathes, mills, 3D printing, laser cutting.
  • Strong experience with CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam, Fusion 360).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Strong knowledge of machining materials, tooling, and cutting methods.
  • Previous experience mentoring or supervising junior machinists.
  • Comfortable interacting with various departments such as R&D, fixture design, and manufacturing.
  • Excellent attention to detail and high standards for quality control.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with advanced machines/technology such as swiss style lathe systems.
  • Associate’s degree or engineering discipline background.
Physical Requirements

Ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment.

Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated base pay range for this position is: $78,000 – $125,235. Additional compensation may include an annual performance bonus and eligibility for the Company’s long‑term incentive program.
