We are seeking an exceptional Principal Machine Learning (ML) Engineer/Researcher to join our premier ML innovation team at Apple. As a key member of this team, you will drive the development and shipping of cutting-edge ML technologies that improve the lives of billions of Apple customers. The successful candidate will lead the design, implementation, and testing of innovative ML algorithms, methods, and systems for personalization, memory, diagnostics, representation, and reasoning. This role requires a deep understanding of ML fundamentals, strong leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

**Description**

This is a technical lead position, working with both junior and senior ML engineers/researchers, and product engineers, in a cross-functional setting. Your core responsibilities will include: (Hands-on) leading or co-leading the design, implementation, and testing of algorithms, methods, and systems for ML-based personalization, memory, diagnostics, and reasoning. This involves working with multi-functional engineering teams, defining dependencies, APIs, and technical agreements. You will also be expected to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in ML and explore their applications to Apple products and services.

**Minimum Qualifications**

1. Strong ML expertise and deep understanding of ML fundamentals, including mathematics, architectures, representation, reasoning, generation/diffusion processes, and diagnostics.
2. Strong computer science algorithmic and theoretical knowledge, along with solid statistical fundamentals.
3. At least 7 years experience in training, evaluating, and characterizing ML models and end-to-end systems.
4. At least 5 years of experience in one domain of ML application such as NLP, Computer Vision, or reinforcement learning, with a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in these areas.
5. Ability to distill and formulate a vision and requirements from vague project descriptions.
6. Excellent leadership and communication skills.
7. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, PyTorch, or related high-level languages.
8. PhD in CS, ECE, Statistics, or equivalent industrial experience.

**Preferred Qualifications**

1. Proven leadership in shipping or designing ML-based products.
2. Experience with cross-functional projects, including de-risking and scoping.
3. Strong understanding of end-to-end systems.

**Pay & Benefits**

At Apple, base pay is part of a total compensation package, determined within a range based on skills, qualifications, experience, and location. The pay range for this role is $207,800 to $378,700. Employees may also participate in stock programs, receive benefits such as medical and dental coverage, retirement plans, discounts, educational reimbursement, bonuses, and relocation assistance.
