Job summary

Eurofins PSS Insourcing Solutions seeks a Principal Formulations Scientist to develop complex drug formulations and assess poorly behaved compounds at our San Diego site. The role combines hands-on lab work with data-driven modeling and AI-enabled approaches to advance new molecules.

The candidate will design experiments, interpret PK/solubility data, and contribute to ELN standards while collaborating with CROs and external partners. A PhD and US work authorization are required.

• PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences or related field; 0–2+ years of related experience.
• Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop prototype and complex formulations for oral, subcutaneous, and/or intravenous delivery to support in-vitro and in-vivo studies.
• Formulate and characterize poorly behaved compounds and develop strategies to overcome solubility or stability limitations.
• Contribute to compound risk assessments using physicochemical properties and in vivo data.
• Design and interpret studies of solubility, stability, and in-vitro performance.
• Apply analytical techniques to characterize compounds and formulations.
• Use PBPK/PBBM tools to predict compound and formulation performance.
• Partner in applying AI to advance new molecules.
• Curate data from CROs and external partners.
• Write and review study protocols and technical reports.
• Record work in an ELN and help develop ELN standards.

Job Description

Eurofins PSS West is looking for a Principal Formulations Scientist to develop and characterize formulations on complex and poorly behaved drug candidates, advance data management and documentation practices, and partner in the innovative application of AI at a client site in San Diego, CA. This scientist combines hands-on lab skills with data-driven, modeling-based assessment of compounds. They are expected to work independently and act as a technical resource for the team.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Design and develop prototype and complex formulations (solutions, suspensions and enabling formulations) for oral, subcutaneous, and/or intravenous (sterile) delivery to support in-vitro and in-vivo studies.
• Formulate and characterize poorly behaved compounds, including those with low solubility or poor stability, and develop strategies to overcome their limitations.
• Contribute to compound risk assessments utilizing physicochemical property information, in vivo performance data, and predictive tools.
• Design and interpret studies of solubility, chemical and physical stability, and in-vitro performance (non-sink dissolution, precipitation).
• Apply analytical techniques (HPLC, DSC, PXRD, spectroscopy), both conceptually and in the lab, to characterize compounds and formulations.
• Use physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) and physiologically based biopharmaceutics modeling (PBBM) tools such as GastroPlus to predict compound and formulation performance.
• Partner in the novel application of AI in the advancement of new molecules.
• Curate data from contract research organizations (CROs) and other external partners.
• Write and review study protocols and technical reports.
• Record work in an ELN, and help develop ELN standards and best practices.

Qualifications

• Experience with complex formulations and with formulating and studying poorly behaved compounds
• Experience performing compound risk assessments
• Strong analytical skills, both conceptual and hands-on in the lab
• Experience with prompting and the application of AI
• Excellent communication, organization and attention to detail
• Experience with GastroPlus or other PBPK/PBBM software
• Experience with statistical analysis
• ELN experience, including developing ELN standards

Basic Minimum Qualifications

• PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field, with 0–2+ years of related experience
• Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship
