This position offers a pay range provided by NYS Department of Transportation, with actual pay based on skills and experience. The base pay range is from $59,994.00/yr to $76,359.00/yr.

Duties Description

Principal Engineering Technicians perform complex civil engineering technical support activities for projects and programs, including:

  • Field positions – serving as construction inspectors, surveyor services, reviewing plans, supervising technicians, inspecting projects, and serving as a project office engineer.
  • Technical Services positions – asphalt/concrete plant inspection, material testing, material approval, pavement and bridge deck coring, geotechnical boring and testing, technical document preparation, and IAST work.
  • Regional Construction Office positions – processing contract acceptance, uncompleted work agreements, final agreements, and archiving records.

The PET reports to an Assistant Engineer or Professional Engineer 1. Responsibilities may include supporting emergency response within the Incident Command System.

Minimum Qualifications

This role is part of the NY HELPS program, which allows non-competitive appointments if minimum qualifications are met.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for appointment via NY HELPS or 55 b/c, which include:

  • Promotional: One year of permanent service in related roles such as Engineering Geologist, Materials Analyst, Engineering Technician, or Senior Engineering Technician.
  • Open Competitive: Either four years assisting in engineering or related fields with a high school diploma, or an associate's degree with two years of relevant experience, or a bachelor's degree in a related field.

Qualified candidates from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or those eligible for reassignment or transfer may also be considered.

Additional Comments

This title is part of the NY HELPS program, which may initially offer non-competitive employment, with conversion to competitive status in the future. Educational credentials must be from accredited institutions, with verification required for degrees from outside the U.S.
