Job description

Principal Engineer - Underground Mine Planning (Kennecott Utah Copper LLC, Herriman, UT):

Develop and approve mining development designs, incorporating inputs and constraints from geotechnical engineering, ventilation, geology, operations and safety. Design longhole stope drills and blast designs using industry best practices. Manage technical work packages, including developing scope, schedule, and costs for life of mine projects. Manage critical underground risks related to ventilation. Execute monthly, quarterly, annual, and life of mine development and production forecasts. Oversee the execution of surveying activities including standard operating procedures, drone scanning, lidar scanning, survey pickups and lineouts to drive precision and quality control in tunneling and stope blasting. Lead a diverse team of engineers and technicians to achieve technical excellence and drive industry best practice. Lead engagement with internal stakeholders to establish clear lines of communication with the open pit operation and concentrator and ensure underground needs are accounted for correctly. Mentor team members and support professional development goals.


Telecommuting permitted up to 25%.

Full time employment, Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field and 10 years of related work experience, of
which 5 years are progressive post-baccalaureate related work experience in the mining industry. Employer will accept an additional 2 years of related experience in the mining industry in
lieu of a Bachelor's degree.


Must have 7 years of experience in mine design and scheduling.


Must have 5 years of experience in each of the following:

  • Drill and blast design; and
  • Deswik Suite for mine planning activities.

Must have 3 years of experience leading a diverse technical team in the mining industry.


Telecommuting permitted up to 25%.


Domestic travel required up to 15%.
