Job summary

PSEG Long Island is seeking a Principal Engineer - Technical Supervisor to lead the engineering and design function for major electric transmission capital projects up to 345 kV. You will guide technical leadership and oversee scope, budget, and schedule to ensure safe, reliable delivery.

Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop designs, review construction packages, and maintain alignment with regulatory requirements and asset performance goals.

Qualifications

Principal Engineer - Technical Supervisor

Job Summary:

The Principal Engineer is responsible for leading the engineering and design function for major electric transmission capital projects, including facilities up to 345 kV. This role provides technical leadership and oversight to ensure projects are executed safely, reliably, and in accordance with established performance, quality, and regulatory requirements. The Principal Engineer manages project scope, budget, and schedule while driving engineering excellence throughout the project lifecycle. Working closely with internal and external stakeholders, this position oversees the development and review of transmission system designs and construction packages. The role ensures that engineering solutions support system reliability, operational efficiency, and long‑term asset performance.

Roles that include NERC CIP responsibilities:
  • Owns functional tasks on day‑to‑day compliance with the all the NERC Standard's Requirements assigned.
  • Serves as contact for all assigned compliance activities. Coordinates the reviews and approvals as specified in Standard Requirements.
  • Ensures required policies/procedures are followed and that any local dept‑level procedures encompassing the NERC Compliance Standards Requirements are up to date.
  • Provides materials for required reviews and approvals of all assigned compliance activities for submission.
  • Works with SME Mgrs and Lead SME Contributor on functional day‑to‑day compliance activities to ensure all are effectively coordinated, sustained in the LOB. Provides updated and approved input to the Lead SME for the Reliability Standard Audit Worksheets, CIP Evidence Request Tool, O&P Evidence Tracking Sheet and for all assigned NERC Standard. Includes FERC, NERC, NPCC, LIPA, NY State, DHS.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Lead and supervise a team of engineers, designers, contractors, and represented IBEW employees to successfully deliver transmission projects, including performance management, coaching, and professional development.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison between PSEG Long Island and external architect‑engineering firms, ensuring compliance with company standards, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including Project Management, Licensing & Permitting, Construction, Outage Planning, System Planning, External Affairs, Customer Outreach, Real Estate, and Operations to develop and execute detailed project designs.
  • Provide technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle, including planning, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and closeout activities.
  • Review, approve and oversee engineering and construction packages to ensure compliance with engineering standards, construction requirements, regulatory obligations, and safety codes.
  • Resolve complex engineering and technical issues by evaluating alternatives and implementing effective solutions.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve transmission construction standards, specifications, and engineering practices.
  • Perform and review engineering analyses and calculations, including equipment ratings, lightning protection, insulation coordination, voltage drop, short‑circuit studies, conductor sizing, and other transmission design evaluations in accordance with applicable industry standards.
  • Coordinate with system planners, protection engineers, project managers, vendors, consultants, contractors, and operating personnel to support successful project execution.
  • Support the procurement and evaluation of major transmission equipment and materials.
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of PSEG Long Island engineering standards, industry regulations, and applicable codes.
  • Mentor and develop engineering staff, fostering technical excellence and continuous learning within the organization.
  • Support emergency response and storm restoration efforts.
  • Promote a culture of safety, operational excellence, accountability, and effective internal controls across all project activities.
Job Specific Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related engineering discipline required.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of engineering experience, including at least five (5) years in the electric utility industry with experience in transmission engineering, planning, design, construction, and transmission systems.
  • Supervisory experience in an engineering environment.
  • Knowledge of utility industry standards and practices (IEEE, NESC, OSHA, RUS, ASCE, EPRI, NEMA).
  • Experience with engineering/design software (PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, PLS-CAISSON, MFAD, CYME) and document control systems.
  • Ability to manage and influence diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven project and priority management skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making abilities.
  • Effective planning, organization, and project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to leverage diverse perspectives to achieve results.
  • Availability to support emergency response and storm restoration efforts.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and ability to travel as required.
  • Compliance with the Department of Energy's regulation 10 CFR 810 is required.
Desired:
  • New York State Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience leading large‑scale transmission projects.
  • Knowledge of Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • Advanced degree or technical training.
  • Advanced knowledge of utility regulations, codes, standards, and engineering principles.
