Job summary

UDR Consulting, INC is seeking a Principal Engineer- Mechanical HVAC Design Engineer for the Savannah River Site (Aiken, SC). The role centers on senior HVAC design leadership, engineering analysis, and generation of design output documents for complex facilities in a nuclear/process chemical environment.

Requires a PhD with 5+ years or MS with 8+ years or BS with 10+ years in relevant fields, extensive HVAC design experience, and knowledge of NFPA/ASHRAE/ASME/SMACNA/ARI codes.

  • PhD with 5+ years or MS with 8+ years or BS with 10+ years of experience.
  • HVAC design experience in nuclear or process chemical industries is required.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 90A/90B/91/801; ASHRAE Fundamentals; ASME AG-1/509/510; SMACNA; ARI 410/430/450.
  • Ability to walk down systems in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Provide design engineering staff augmentation support to SRNS.
  • Develop HVAC design calculations for equipment sizing, duct sizing, pressure drops, tower sizing, heating/cooling loads, air balancing.
  • Create/modify P&IDs, system descriptions, mechanical equipment lists; vendor document reviews.
  • Lead and mentor staff; apply advanced technical practices to solve complex problems.

Principal Engineer- Mechanical HVAC Design Engineer

DUTIES

Provide design engineering staff augmentation support to SRNS. Primary responsibilities include engineering analysis, design development and generation of design output documents including but not limited to:

  • Process Flow; Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams; System Descriptions; Mechanical Equipment Lists; Mechanical Equipment Sizing; Pipe and Valve Specifications; Failure Analysis;
  • Accident Analysis; Finite Element Analysis; ASME Code Design and Evaluation; Pipe Stress Analysis;
  • Material Handling Design; Fire Protection Design; HVAC Design; and Vendor Document Reviews.
  • Define scope of technical programs and develop effective, quality solutions to challenges which involve unique or controversial problems. Creatively meet all company and industry requirements and apply site systems to achieve quality, timely and cost-effective results. Give quality guidance and assistance to less senior professionals on related tasks.
  • Apply technical experience in field of specialization or broad-based experience in multiple technical fields, to resolve complex problems.
  • Incorporate advanced technical practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning.
  • Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as having expertise in a functional area(s) of technical expertise.
  • Provide direction and position responsibility both inside and outside department lines on programs seeking new approaches to problems and new application of existing engineering or scientific principles.
  • Evaluate the results of programs and prepares reports and recommendations based on these evaluations.
  • Identify and recommend improvements where established technology components and methodology are inadequate for solution.
  • Keep informed of the advancement of technology as applied through one's area of technology.
  • Prepare plans including schedules, budgets and personnel requirements for solving technical tasks identified by management.
  • Develop schedules, monitor progress, monitor expenditures of budget and review quality of work performed.
  • Communicate results and objectives verbally and in manuscripts form to customers colleagues and management.
  • Occasionally prepare reports for external publication.
  • Enhance expertise in field through leadership in local technical societies.
  • Demonstrate creative ability through medium of patent disclosures, problem solving, engineering reports, technical papers and articles.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Education: PhD degree in applicable science or engineering discipline and 5 plus years experience, OR a MS degree with 8 plus years' experience; or BS and 10 years' experience.

Additional Duties
  • Provide design engineering staff augmentation support to SRNS.
  • Primary responsibilities include:
  • HVAC design development and generation of design output documents including but not limited to calculations for equipment sizing, duct sizing, pressure drops, cooling tower sizing, heating and cooling loads, and air balancing.
  • Create/modify piping and instrumentation diagrams, system descriptions, mechanical equipment lists, integration with fire protection design, and vendor document reviews.
  • Engineering Services shall be provided using SRNS processes and procedures. Programmatic guidance will be provided by SRNS.
Additional Education

BS Degree in Mechanical, Chemical or Nuclear Engineering or current registration as a Professional Engineer in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering.

Additional Experience/Qualifications
  • Candidate must demonstrate 10 years HVAC design experience in the nuclear or process chemical industry.
  • Candidate must demonstrate knowledge of NFPA 90A, 90B, 91, and 801; ASHRAE Fundamentals; ASME AG-1, 509 and 510; SMACNA; and ARI 410, 430 and 450.
  • Candidate must have the ability to walk down systems in the field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Candidate demonstrates experience in 2D MicroStation Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD).
  • Previous SRNS design experience and familiarity with the processes and procedures for providing engineering support to SRS facilities is preferred.
  • Possession of an active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two (2) years is preferred.
