We streamline onboarding, compliance, scheduling, and placement for students through technology that connects healthcare institutions with educational programs. As a fast-growing startup, we are looking for a Principal Engineer with deep technical expertise, a hands-on approach to coding, and a passion for healthcare innovation to lead engineering efforts from the frontlines.

Position Overview: As Principal Engineer, you will serve as the technical cornerstone of the company. This role is ideal for a senior technologist who thrives in a fast-paced, startup environment and wants to stay hands-on with code while shaping engineering standards and leading technical architecture. You will collaborate closely with Product, Sales, and executive leadership to innovate and execute on our roadmap, improve platform scalability, and ensure our systems meet the complex demands of healthcare and educational partners.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, build, and maintain core systems across Externi’s SaaS platform using modern frameworks and cloud-native infrastructure.
• Be a hands-on contributor and technical leader, setting standards for code quality, performance, and reliability.
• Lead system architecture and technical decision-making, ensuring scalability, security, and compliance—particularly in handling sensitive healthcare data.
• Work cross-functionally with Product, Design, and business stakeholders to define requirements and translate them into well-architected solutions.
• Drive development efforts across backend (.NET, C#, SQL) and frontend (Angular with TypeScript) codebases.
• Implement and oversee DevOps practices using Azure Container Apps, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Identify and prioritize technical debt, and develop solutions to improve codebase maintainability.
• Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
• Stay informed of AI innovations, healthcare compliance trends, and emerging tech to guide platform evolution.
• Contribute to long-term product planning and company strategy as a senior member of the team.

Required Qualifications:

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on full-stack development in cloud environments.
• Strong expertise in:
• .NET (ASP.NET Core, C#)
• Angular with TypeScript
• Azure services & container-based deployments
• SQL and infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform
• Proven ability to architect and scale SaaS systems handling sensitive data.
• Hands-on experience building and shipping cloud-native applications.
• Deep understanding of security, compliance, and performance best practices in a healthcare or regulated environment.
• Familiarity with agile development, version control, CI/CD, and modern dev workflows.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a high level of ownership over deliverables.
• Effective communicator and team player with strong cross-functional collaboration experience.
• Prior experience in a startup environment or having served as a technical co-founder or early-stage builder.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with HIPAA, HITECH, or similar healthcare regulatory frameworks.
• Experience with learning management systems (LMS), EHR platforms, or healthcare tech integrations.
• Exposure to AI/ML applications in a product context.
• Passion for healthcare education and improving workforce pipelines.
