Job description

Minimum qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, a similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience
2. 15 years of software engineering experience
3. Experience with technical innovation in relevant domains (e.g., distributed systems, information retrieval, resource optimization) in a cross-functional enterprise
4. Experience with thought leadership, problem identification, and design at Principal Engineer scope and difficulty

Preferred qualifications:

1. An advanced degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a similar technical field is strongly desired
2. 20 years of software engineering experience
3. Experience with cross-organizational collaboration and influencing team directions and roadmaps
4. Experience delivering within time-sensitive timelines
5. Ability to go deep technically and solve complex engineering problems
6. Excellent organization, prioritization, and communication skills

About the role:

The Principal Engineer will oversee Data Indexing Infrastructure (DII), guiding technical decisions and strategy, especially in indexing and large distributed systems. You will shape long-term directions, mentor tech leads, and collaborate across teams to support Google's flagship products and future innovations.

Additional responsibilities include:

• Guiding how the IR stack handles data for ML training applications
• Mentoring Data Indexing tech leads and maintaining system health
• Ensuring Data Indexing aligns with end-to-end Core Data product offerings
• Collaborating with product management to support current and future customer needs

Compensation:

The US base salary range for this role is $294,000-$414,000 plus bonus, equity, and benefits. Salary is determined by role, level, location, skills, experience, and education.
