Overview
Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is hiring a Principal Engineer – Data to support the Instrumentation & Data team in Melbourne, FL. The role focuses on designing, developing, and integrating complex test data acquisition systems for Flight, Lab, Ground, and Specialty Test articles.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform all aspects of data engineering from initial data management plan and Interface Control Document (ICD) development through implementation and maintenance.
- Develop requirements for passive bus data connections across common protocols (Ethernet, 1553, 1394, ARINC429, CAN, etc.) combined with analog sensor data for on‑vehicle recordings in IRIG106 CH10 or TmNS and real‑time telemetry.
- Support development of data management plans to enable collection across various test mediums.
- Design and build hardware and software tools that facilitate collection, processing, and dissemination of test data nationwide.
- Conduct data collection configuration for Lab, Ground, and Flight Test Instrumentation systems, coordinate test activity, and communicate status to leadership.
- Assist with test readiness reviews, planning working groups, and pre‑ and post‑test briefings.
- Troubleshoot bus data collection systems and resolve system issues.
- Collaborate within an Integrated Product Team (IPT) environment, interfacing with IPT leadership, suppliers, customers, and other technical disciplines.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline and at least 5 years of related professional/military experience, OR
- Master of Science degree in a STEM discipline and at least 3 years of related professional/military experience, OR
- Ph.D. in a STEM discipline and at least 1 year of related professional/military experience.
- Must maintain a U.S. government Secret clearance (in‑scope or enrolled in Continuous Evaluation) within a reasonable timeframe.
- Experience with test data acquisition systems, data configuration and collection software, and database development for measurable and test data is desired.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ground and flight data acquisition system design and testing methodologies experience, especially bus data collection.
- Familiarity with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using SysML in Cameo and experience with virtualization platforms such as VMWare.
- Demonstrated ability to shape and document technical processes, Interface Control Documents, and supplier Statements of Work.
- Independent problem solving and minimal direction required.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to interact across all IPT levels.
Salary, Benefits, and Work Arrangements
Primary level salary range: $98,400.00 – $147,600.00.
Additional benefits include health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, a savings plan, company‑paid holidays, and paid time off for vacation or personal business. Flexible work arrangements are offered, including a 9/8 schedule with every other Friday off.

Relocation assistance may be available. The position requires at least 10% travel to support program activities and integration. Clearance type required: Secret. Travel: Yes, 25% of the time. Position is contingent on program funding.
