Job description

Job Purpose

The Principal Engineer, Combustion Aerodynamics, supports the development, integration, and validation of the reactor subsystem within the KARNO generator. This key role involves designing products using sound engineering principles while adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements. The work may include aerodynamic, mechanical, and electrical engineering for all products.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Own and have aerodynamic design authority of the reactor and oxidation system, including aerodynamics, fuel/air mixing, heat release management, emissions, and performance.
  2. Design and oversee laboratory facilities focused on combustion aero system development and validation.
  3. Oversee emissions certification in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  4. Support hardware components, sub-systems, and entire engine systems in terms of functionality, durability, manufacturability, serviceability, cost, weight, and validation.
  5. Collaborate with design, electrical, software, and performance teams to establish requirements and generate robust designs.
  6. Prepare technical reports and conduct reviews to present findings, propose solutions, and manage trade-offs and engineering decisions.
  7. Lead efforts to build, test, and validate prototypes to identify and address design flaws.
  8. Support the design checking process by reviewing prints and ensuring alignment with Hyliion's product design guidelines.
  9. Assist in identifying and selecting suppliers for prototypes and production needs.
  10. Support procurement of hardware from key suppliers as needed.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned to support business needs.

Education, Experience, and Certifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering required.
  • 15 years of engineering experience.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering (Master's or Doctoral).
  • At least 5 years in aerospace, power, or industrial heating industries.
  • Experience working with governmental agencies (EPA, CARB, etc.) for certification testing and reporting, focusing on emissions data conventions and standards.
  • Extensive experience in combustion system development, particularly with gas turbines or similar architectures.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to design and troubleshoot complex aero and combustion systems.
  • Experience with emissions testing and gas analyzers for combustion products.
  • Proficiency in lab testing environments, instrumentation, and data interpretation.
  • Experience in conceptual design of combustion systems based on heat output requirements.
  • Familiarity with Reactor Flow Networks (e.g., CANTERA, CHEMKIN) and combustion analysis models.
  • Experience in fluid and thermal systems design and optimization.
  • Collaborative personality with a willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Self-starter with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 10% for site visits.
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools (preferably NX), CFD software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent or CFX), and Microsoft Office Suite.
Role Classification and Working Conditions

This is a salaried, exempt-level position. The role involves working in an office environment and operational/warehouse/production environments.

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% for site visits.
