Overview

The AbbVie Combination Product Development and Drug Delivery (CPD-DD) group provides design and development expertise for drug delivery systems for AbbVie biopharmaceuticals. The Landscaping & Platform Definition (L&PD) group conducts front-end needs assessments for delivery systems, identifying potential candidates and assessing their feasibility to find the best fit for our needs. Our delivery system portfolio includes simple oral syringes to complex devices like autoinjectors, patch pumps, and infusion pumps.

As therapeutics requiring delivery devices grow and engagement in early-stage development increases, we seek an individual based in Lake County, IL, with expertise in delivery systems, design control, and systematic needs definition to support our pipeline.

Responsibilities

• Support identification of patient needs and development of business and technical requirements for delivery systems.
• Maintain familiarity with external delivery system manufacturers and develop a landscape of available options.
• Evaluate and identify leading candidates based on technical and business criteria.
• Scope feasibility assessments, request proposals, and manage budgets.
• Develop feasibility contracts and preliminary timelines for development.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external partners, including international development partners, fostering ongoing relationships through face-to-face visits and teleconferences.

Qualifications

• BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical, Biomedical, or related engineering discipline.
• Extensive experience (14+ years with BS, 12+ with MS, or 6+ with PhD) in product development, including medical devices and drug delivery systems.
• Knowledge of design control, combination products, and device development.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work in fast-paced, multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience with medical device regulations and standards preferred.
• Willingness to travel 10-20% as needed.
