The Department ofPublic Works is responsible fordelivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure,maintainingCity facilities and fleet assets,facilitatingand regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. The Department of Public Works(DPW)iscurrently seeking to fill one (1) Principal Engineer/Architect positionin the City Facilities and Architectural Services (CFAS) Division.This is a temporary (Overstrength) position that isanticipatedto be funded throughJune 30, 2025, subject to further extension asappropriate. If this position is not extended through the budget process, thecitymayseekto place you in other internal job opportunities based on yourpreviouswork experience.

Salary range(s) for this classification is $179,076.82 - $218,123.62annually. This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall bedeterminedby the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

The Principal Engineer/Architect will support the Library Department (LD) in leading the coordination for the Library Facilities and Customer Experience Planning. This individual willplay a key leadership role in driving critical infrastructure initiatives,including supporting the implementation oftheCalifornia State LibraryBuilding Forward Infrastructure Grantprojectsandmanagingcapital andfacilities planning processesin collaboration with the LD and consultants.Thisindividualwill act as a leader, ensuringtimelyandeffectiveproject execution,and delivering results that meet organizational and state fundingobjectives.

Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Principal Engineer/Architect willrequire the ability to extensively collaborate across the LD, the DPW, Planning, Building and Code Enforcement (PBCE) and other contractors/vendors, whilemaintainingadherence to budgets, timelines, and plans. Outstanding leadership, a high degree of accountability,and the ability toestablishan excellent working relationship with all stakeholdersare required tobe successful in this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and construction of major public works projects, in partnership with the Library Department.

  • Lead a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, architects, technicians, and inspectors to deliver high-quality, cost-effective, and consistent services.

  • Oversee engineering/architectural or other technical research; review, analyze, and prepare recommendations to Senior and Executive staffregardingproject and/or program scope orobjectives.

  • Direct and coordinate the preparation of cost estimates and project and/or program budgets;monitorbudgets and schedules for performance.

  • Consult with Senior and Executive staff, contractors, other departments, and consultants to plan, design, and construct major engineering/architectural and/or other technical projects.

  • Direct and coordinate the creation, planning, and management of capital budgets and staffing plans to successfully deliver capital projects.

  • Oversee the planning and execution of the procurements of design consultants and construction contracts.

  • Partner with the department’s other executive staff to lead transformation, training, and other process improvement efforts in the City’s capital improvement program.

  • Prepare technical reports and correspondence asrequired.

Education:Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in therequired professional discipline.

Experience:Eight (8) years of progressively responsible,directly relatedprofessional experience, including at least three (3) years of experience at a level equivalent to Senior Engineer or Senior Architect.

Required Licensing:

  • Possession of a Certificate of Registration in the required discipline.

  • Possession of a validState of CaliforniaDriver’sLicense may berequired.

Form 700 Requirement:

This position requires a disclosure of outside investments, real property interest, income, and business positions. You must complete and file an “Assuming Office Form 700” with the City Clerk’s Office within the first 30 days of employment with the office.
