Job summary

Microchip Technology Inc. is seeking a Principal Engineer - Applications to join our Frequency and Timing Systems group. You will plan, install, and optimize time and frequency equipment at customer sites, delivering high-quality solutions in fast-paced environments.

The ideal candidate has 10+ years of field engineering experience with time and frequency systems, strong troubleshooting, and excellent communication skills, with travel as needed. Requires TS/SCI clearance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Electronics, or related field).
  • Minimum 10 years of field engineering experience.
  • Proven experience with time and frequency systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and documentation.
  • Proficient with tools, software, and equipment for time and frequency systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in customer support, project management, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to travel for customer support (including short-notice travel).
  • Active TS/SCI clearance is required.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues related to time and frequency systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and repairs.
  • Provide on-site and remote technical support and training.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed technical documentation and project records.
  • Lead or collaborate with internal teams and customers to meet project requirements.

Job Description

Microchip’s Frequency and Timing Systems group is a world leader in precise time solutions and sets the world's standard for time. The company generates, distributes, and applies precise time for communications, aerospace/defense, IT infrastructure, and metrology industries. Microchip is seeking a Principal Engineer - Applications to join our team with expertise in troubleshooting, installation, and maintenance of time and frequency systems. The ideal candidate will possess strong skills in customer support, project management, and technical documentation. This role requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively to deliver high-quality solutions in fast-paced environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, install, configure, and transition/commission time and frequency equipment and systems at customer sites.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues related to time and frequency systems, ensuring minimal downtime.
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and repairs to optimize system performance.
  • Provide on-site and remote technical support and training to customers and end-users.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed technical documentation, service reports, and project records.
  • Lead/Collaborate with internal teams and customers to ensure project requirements and deadlines are met.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and industry standards during all field operations.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, providing updates, guidance, and technical expertise.
  • Ability to travel as required for customer support (including occasional short-notice travel)
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Electronics, or related field) or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience
  • Proven experience in field engineering, specifically with time and frequency systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and documentation.
  • Proficiency with relevant tools, software, and equipment for time and frequency systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in customer support, project management, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to travel as required for customer support (including occasional short-notice travel)
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance required
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with GPS, frequency standards, clocks, NTP/PTP servers, etc.
  • Experience with oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, time Internal and Frequency Counters, digital multimeters.
  • Experience with Linux scripting and python.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office with an emphasis on Visio.
  • Familiarity with project management and customer service principles.
