Position Overview

Mott MacDonald is seeking a Principal Lead P&C Engineer to join the team in the Boston, MA, New York, NY, or Iselin, NJ offices. In this role, you will lead the North Division, managing and growing a team of P&C engineers and SCADA specialists. This position is ideal for a very senior candidate eager to oversee a full team and drive excellence in engineering projects. The role involves hands-on engineering, requiring broad knowledge of electrical utility experience, engineering principles, and practices, especially in protection & controls for switching stations and substations, including design development for transmission and distribution projects. Knowledge of Short Circuit Studies, Relay Settings Calculations, and Database files is a plus.

Your duties will include:

1. Able to provide P&C design for electrical utility projects for distribution and transmission voltages for Switching stations and Substations from 4kV up to and including 500kV.
2. Lead and mentor a team of P&C / SCADA engineers and specialists, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
3. Develop and implement strategies to grow the North Division, ensuring the team is equipped to handle increasing project demands.
4. Drive performance and accountability within the team, setting clear goals and expectations.
5. Proficient in working independently on P&C drawings: one lines, three lines drawings, AC/DC distribution diagrams, relay protection and control schematics, instrumentation and alarm schematics, SCADA controls, layouts, wiring diagrams, control house layouts, cable schedules, and BOMs.
6. Coordinate design with electrical layout designers, engineers, system protection, construction supervisors, commissioning engineers, and field personnel.
7. Experience in calculating AC/DC load bank sizes and battery banks.
8. Provide guidance and quality reviews of P&C designs done by junior designers or contractors.
9. Coordinate with vendors and review technical documentation related to P&C design.
10. Lead a team of designers for complex projects and participate in technical discussions with clients.
11. Proven experience with engineering and design of microprocessor relays, controls of high voltage equipment, SCADA, and related systems.
12. Participate in estimating and scheduling P&C work for bids and proposals.

Candidate Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering; Master’s preferred.
• 15+ years of experience in protection, control, and SCADA.
• At least 5 years of experience in electrical utility switching stations/substations, with knowledge of station equipment and protection & controls.
• Proficiency with relay schemes, fiber optics, SCADA, and power distribution controls.
• Experience with complex control schematics and electrical layout drawings.
• Knowledge of NERC and IEEE standards.
• Ability to train and mentor junior staff.
• Excellent communication skills.
• PE registration preferred.
