Job description

Principal Electrical Engineer – Industrial Cooling Systems

Seeking a highly experienced Principal Electrical Engineer to support the engineering and commercialization of advanced centrifugal chiller systems for the U.S. market.

This senior-level position will play a critical role in aligning electrical engineering practices across U.S. operations and international design teams. The successful candidate will help ensure that customer requirements, U.S. electrical codes, and product certification standards are incorporated early in the engineering process, supporting accurate project proposals, efficient design execution, and reliable equipment performance.

Rather than focusing exclusively on detailed electrical design, this role emphasizes technical leadership, engineering coordination, regulatory compliance, and oversight of design interfaces and modifications. You will work closely with customers, suppliers, certification organizations, and overseas engineering partners to resolve technical challenges and establish consistent engineering practices.

This is an opportunity for an experienced electrical engineering professional to influence product development, improve project execution, and contribute to the long-term growth of a U.S. engineering organization.

What You'll Be Responsible For
  • Engineering Leadership: Guide electrical engineering activities from initial customer discussions and project estimating through design development and engineering revisions.
  • Code Compliance: Interpret applicable U.S. electrical and safety standards, including UL, NEC, and IEEE requirements, and ensure they are reflected in project specifications and engineering documentation.
  • International Collaboration: Coordinate technical requirements and design activities with engineering teams in Japan, ensuring U.S. customer expectations and compliance obligations are clearly understood.
  • System Integration: Define electrical interfaces, subsystem boundaries, and technical responsibilities to support compatibility across complex equipment systems.
  • Design Governance: Establish and maintain a structured process for reviewing, approving, and documenting engineering changes throughout the quotation and design lifecycle.
  • Technical Documentation: Evaluate electrical drawings and design packages, including power distribution diagrams, control panel layouts, wiring schematics, and input/output documentation.
  • Testing and Validation: Ensure compliance and verification requirements are incorporated into engineering plans, factory testing procedures, and site acceptance documentation.
  • Customer and Supplier Support: Provide technical guidance to customers, system integrators, suppliers, and other project stakeholders throughout the engineering process.
  • Certification Coordination: Manage U.S. certification activities, prepare technical submissions, respond to compliance inquiries, and coordinate corrective actions when necessary.
  • Field and Commissioning Support: Assist with factory acceptance testing, equipment installation, site commissioning, and troubleshooting. Work with international teams to determine root causes and implement corrective design changes.
  • Engineering Standards Development: Help create repeatable electrical design practices, standard system configurations, and technical guidelines tailored to the U.S. market.

Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on business and project needs.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 12+ years of relevant engineering experience, including at least 7 years leading electrical engineering project scope across estimating, design execution, and change management for industrial or packaged equipment.
  • Experience interpreting electrical codes and regulatory standards and applying them to engineering specifications, project proposals, and design documentation.
  • Strong technical knowledge of industrial electrical systems, including power distribution, electrical protection, control panels, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and instrumentation.
  • Ability to assess electrical designs and identify technical issues, integration risks, and potential design improvements.
  • Proficiency in reviewing electrical engineering drawings, including single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and I/O documentation.
  • Experience managing engineering requirements, technical risks, project issues, design decisions, and configuration changes.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to serve as a technical point of contact for customers while coordinating with international engineering teams.
Preferred Experience

Candidates with the following qualifications will be especially attractive:

  • Experience obtaining or supporting UL certification and ensuring compliance with NEC requirements.
  • Familiarity with Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
  • Experience with centrifugal chillers, commercial or industrial HVAC systems, rotating equipment, or other complex industrial machinery.
  • Involvement in the full equipment lifecycle, including project estimating, engineering, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning.
  • Experience incorporating field feedback into engineering improvements and future product designs.
  • Background in developing standard electrical system architectures, design guidelines, and configurable equipment options.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing engineering, production processes, and equipment test readiness.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or other relevant technical certifications.
Work Schedule and Travel
  • Standard Monday–Friday workweek.
  • Approximately 25% domestic and/or international travel.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be necessary to support project requirements.
  • The position involves primarily engineering and office-based activities, with occasional standing, walking, and lifting of materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
Benefits and Career Development
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) plan with company matching.
  • Paid vacation and sick time.
  • 15 paid holidays.
  • Opportunities for continued professional development and career advancement.
  • The opportunity to contribute to complex engineering projects and collaborate with global technical teams.
