Job summary

Bloom Energy seeks a Principal Electrical Engineer to lead electrical design for fuel-cell systems, reporting to the Senior Manager of Electrical Design Engineering. This on-site role is based in San Jose, CA or Newark, DE and requires extensive experience with power systems and code compliance.

This role will report to the Senior Manager, Electrical Design Engineering and will be based in San Jose, CA or Newark, DE. This is a fully on-site, in office role 5 days a week. Location based in: San Jose, CA or Newark, DE

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development and review of electrical installation packages, including single-line diagrams, equipment layouts, specifications, calculations, and details that meet project requirements, applicable codes, and local jurisdiction requirements.
• Create electrical installation packages that detail how fuel cells will be installed at a customer’s facility, adhering to the National Electric Code (NEC) and local jurisdiction requirements as needed.
• Communicate engineering and technical data effectively by implementing project milestones through collaboration.
• Provide technical support while working with 3rd party microgrid controllers.
• Create Sequence of Operations to state how the fuel cells will transfer from paralleling with the utility to microgrid (island) operation.
• Responsible for ensuring the electrical designs conform to specifications required for the implementation of Bloom Energy fuel cell systems.
• Serve as Engineer of Record for projects in jurisdictions where licensed and authorized, including taking responsible charge of work, reviewing design documents, and signing and sealing documents when appropriate.
• Act as a technical authority for low- and medium-voltage distribution, fuel cell generation, grid-connected and islanded microgrids, protection and control, and integration with site electrical systems.
• Perform or review power-system studies and calculations, including short circuit, protective-device coordination, arc flash, load flow, voltage drop, grounding, and equipment sizing; identify and resolve design risks.
• Lead milestone design reviews for technical quality, code compliance, constructability, and completeness; drive design comments, deviations, and engineering changes to timely closure.
• Develop and maintain electrical standards, equipment specifications, design criteria, calculation templates, and review practices; use lessons learned to reduce rework, cost, and schedule risk.
• Review equipment packages, vendor submittals, technical bids, and proposed exceptions against Bloom requirements; partner with Supply Chain and suppliers to resolve gaps.
• Lead technical resolution of complex field, construction, commissioning, and equipment issues, including root-cause analysis and corrective actions when needed.
• Coordinate with remote engineering and drafting teams on design development and AutoCAD deliverables; provide technical direction and mentor engineers and designers.
• Support the Supply Chain Team by reviewing electrical equipment packages and ensuring they meet Bloom’s specifications.
• Represent electrical engineering with customers, utilities, authorities having jurisdiction, third-Party EORs, EPC partners, OEMs, and internal project teams on technical and code matters.

Required qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
• At least 10 years of progressively responsible electrical or power-systems engineering experience, including commercial, industrial, utility, distributed-generation, or microgrid projects.
• Technical knowledge, including Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Renewable Energy, Green Energy.
• Active Professional Engineer license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. Ability and willingness to obtain licensure by comity in additional states as project needs require and to serve as Engineer of Record where appropriately licensed.
• Strong design knowledge of low- and medium-voltage systems, switchgear, transformers, grounding, protection and control, inverter-based resources, and grid-connected and islanded operation.
• Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, applicable NFPA, California Rule 21 and IEEE standards, utility interconnection requirements, and state and local code requirements.
• Experience performing or independently reviewing power-system studies using ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or equivalent tools.
• Ability to make independent engineering judgments, communicate technical risks clearly, and lead complex issues to closure across functions.
• Experience developing or reviewing technical specifications, drawings, calculations, and design packages and supporting their implementation in the field.
• Must be intuitive and proactive. i.e., think many steps ahead towards the expected outcome and highlight potential risks to the Project Management Team.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to excel in a professional environment with a lot of cross functional collaboration.

Preferred experience

• B.S./M.S./Ph.D. in electrical engineering or a related field
• 10+ years relevant work experience with B.S./M.S.
• Relevant experience in power systems engineering, solar, or renewables.
• Experience with Civil, Structural, and Plumbing details is a plus. Not required.
• Construction, EPC, MEP, or facility maintenance experience is a plus.
• Prior experience serving as Engineer of Record or providing final technical approval for complex electrical designs.
• Experience with fuel cell systems, microgrids, grid-forming and grid-following resources.
• Experience improving engineering standards or design governance and mentoring engineers without direct reporting authority.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, construction documents, commissioning, and multidisciplinary design coordination.
