Job summary

SMS group USA is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to design, develop, and implement cutting‑edge automation solutions and power drive technologies for the metals industry. You will lead engineering efforts across project life cycles, from sales through commissioning.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, extensive metals industry experience, expertise in automation, power and drive systems, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Extensive experience in an engineering role in the metals or a similar industry.
  • Experience with automation, power and drive systems.
  • Experience in automation practices.
  • Demonstrates ability to apply engineering principles to design problems.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and mentor less experienced personnel.
  • Willingness to travel to support project work.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement automation and power drive technologies.
  • Upgrade DC and AC drives and review power system requirements.
  • Outline regulator performance based on process applications.
  • Share technical expertise in metals industry areas for all project life cycles.
  • Support existing installed systems and assist customers with issues.
  • Develop new engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Interface with project teams, experts, customers and suppliers.
  • Mentor junior engineers during design and execution.
  • Perform on-site commissioning and training as required.

Job Description

We are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to design, develop, and implement cutting‑edge automation solutions and power drive technologies for the metals industry.

What You’ll Do
  • Experience with DC and AC drive upgrades
  • Review basic power system requirements for drive feeders and protection
  • Outline regulator performance/response based on process applications
  • Share technical expertise in metals industry areas such as Melting, Casting or Rolling Mill applications for all project life cycles (sales, development, commissioning, and support)
  • Support existing installed systems and assist customers with challenging technical issues through process knowledge, data analysis, and implementation
  • Complete assignments requiring development of new and/or improved engineering techniques and procedures
  • Interface and communicate with local project team (project managers, engineers, support personnel) and internal experts from other areas as well as customers and suppliers to provide engineering solutions to technical issues and project‑related matters
  • Mentor young engineers during project design and execution
  • Perform on‑site commissioning and training as required
