Job summary

Roblox is seeking a principal engineer for the database team to shape architecture and launch critical database capabilities that scale globally. You will design engines, optimize performance, and guide best practices while mentoring engineers across Storage, Platform, and product teams.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience
• Extensive experience with large-scale distributed databases or storage engines
• Deep knowledge of database internals (B-trees, MVCC, WAL, query optimization)

Responsibilities

• Design and implement new engine features including indexing, storage formats, WAL, replication, sharding, and query-planner enhancements
• Evolve the control plane for elastic scaling, autonomous healing, and zero-downtime moves across regions
• Profile and optimize critical code paths with advanced tooling and reduce tail latency
• Lead design reviews, performance benchmarks, and post-incident retrospectives
• Automate testing, CI/CD, rollout safety, observability, and autoscaling
