IDEXX is seeking a Principal Data Engineer in Westbrook, ME for data foundations powering AI model training and diagnostic products. This hybrid role requires 2 days onsite weekly, partnering with Data Science and MLE teams to deliver robust data platforms.

You will design and maintain production pipelines with Databricks/dbt, mentor engineers, and contribute to Snowflake integrations and data quality observability.

Qualifications

Job description

At IDEXX, the Principal Data Engineer role focuses on creating reliable data foundations for AI model training and algorithm development that support the company’s inVue Dx and other AI-powered diagnostic products. This is a hybrid position based in Westbrook, ME, with a minimum expectation of 2 days per week onsite.

What you’ll do

• Design, build, and maintain fault-tolerant production data pipelines using Databricks and dbt Core, aligning with the team’s existing medallion architecture and SCD2 patterns.
• Drive delivery for a portion of the team roadmap and collaborate directly with Data Science and MLE colleagues to understand and meet data needs.
• Write and review pipeline code, tests, and documentation so other engineers can confidently extend and maintain it.
• Investigate pipeline failures and data quality issues, and build monitoring and alerting to surface problems early.
• Contribute to Snowflake integration work, including federated connections and history tracking for source systems.
• Mentor junior and mid-level data engineers, with a focus on code quality, data modeling, and platform best practices.
• Review pull requests and pair with teammates on complex issues.
• Help scope and triage incoming Jira tickets, and flag items that need escalation.
• Participate in interviews for future team hires.
• Partner with your manager to establish team standards for testing, deployment, and documentation.

What you’ll bring

• 7+ years of experience in data engineering or a closely related field, including real production experience.
• Strong SQL and Python skills, plus hands-on experience with dbt.
• Hands-on experience with a modern cloud data platform, with Databricks and/or Snowflake strongly preferred.
• Comfort with CI/CD, GitHub version control, and automated testing for data pipelines.
• Experience mentoring or reviewing junior and mid-level engineers.
• Experience working directly with Data Science, MLE, or other technical partners to clarify data requirements.
• Good judgment on when to elevate, when to make the call independently, and when to ask for help.
