The Principal Architect will craft compelling, actionable recommendations, leveraging industry knowledge to address payer-specific challenges and drive transformative outcomes. This is a national role and candidates can be located anywhere in the continental US.
Job Description
We are seeking a Principal Architect - Healthcare Payer Advisory Services, to serve as a trusted advisor to CTOs and CIOs of healthcare payer organizations. This role combines deep technical experience, enterprise architecture exposure, and exceptional communication skills to deliver strategic advisory services. The Principal Architect will craft compelling, actionable recommendations, leveraging industry knowledge to address payer-specific challenges and drive transformative outcomes. This is a national role and candidates can be located anywhere in the continental US.
The Principal at Perficient is an executive leadership position for individuals with the expertise and experience to stand out among their peers as a thought leader and subject matter expert in a specific area of focus. Those areas may be within the technology, functional and/or industry realms. The Principal position provides executive level career option for those individuals who prefer not to pursue the management path, and can be considered an alternative to the General Manager position. Principals are heavily involved in business development, engagement management and delivery assurance. Like the Director position at Perficient, we have several Principal level positions with different areas of primary focus. The core responsibilities that are relevant for all Principals are documented below. The following pages augment this description with specific responsibilities for the different types of Principal level positions.
Depending on the individual and the needs of the given business unit, the specific responsibilities and measurements will vary. Typically, Principals are focused on multiple clients and maintain a utilization goal that will vary as directed by the executive in charge. The responsibilities below capture the breadth of responsibilities our Principals are expected to be able to fulfill with specific expectations across the different areas established for each individual.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Advisory: Act as a trusted partner to CTOs, CIOs, and senior leadership, providing expert guidance on technology strategy, digital transformation, and enterprise architecture aligned with payer business goals.
- Emerging Technology Advisory: Advise clients on the adoption and integration of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and blockchain, to enhance operational efficiency, member experience, and competitive advantage in the payer market.
- Solution Architecture: Design and recommend scalable, innovative technology solutions, including AI-driven tools and platforms, tailored to the unique needs of healthcare payer organizations, ensuring alignment with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Thought Leadership: Develop and present relevant presentations, workshops, whitepapers, and executive briefings to articulate opportunities to bring technical and process solutions to add technical & business value to a diverse set of stakeholders.
- Industry Expertise: Leverage deep understanding of the payer market, including claims processing, member management, provider networks, and regulatory compliance, to address client challenges and identify growth opportunities.
- Mentorship: Guide and mentor junior resources on the account team, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence in leveraging emerging technologies and relentlessly pursing value for the customer.
Qualifications
Technical Skills
- Experience: 10+ years in technology roles, with at least 5 years focused on healthcare payer systems or related industries
- Technical Background: Strong foundation in software development, cloud architecture (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), and integration technologies (e.g., APIs, ETL processes)
- Enterprise Architecture: Demonstrated experience designing and implementing enterprise-level solutions, familiarity in frameworks like TOGAF or Zachman are a nice to have
- Industry Knowledge: In-depth understanding of payer-specific systems (e.g., claims adjudication, enrollment, billing) and regulatory frameworks (e.g., HIPAA, CMS guidelines)
- Professional Services: Strong understanding of the professional services industry, including technical services, systems integration and strategic business solutions
- Service Delivery: Experience delivering and/or developing full lifecycle solution development engagements for enterprise initiatives with gross fees in excess of $5M annually
- Client Solutions: Ability to apply area of expertise to demonstrate specific “value add” solutions from client perspective and establish yourself as an innovator and trusted advisor.

- Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear, business-focused messages for executive audiences
- Storytelling: Proven ability to craft and deliver compelling narratives that inspire action and align stakeholders around a shared vision
- Relationship Building: Strong interpersonal skills to establish trust and credibility with C-level executives and diverse stakeholders
- Problem-Solving: Strategic thinker with a track record of solving complex challenges in high-stakes environments
- Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic consulting environment, managing multiple client priorities simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (e.g., MBA, MS in Computer Science, or related field).
- Certifications in enterprise architecture (e.g., TOGAF, AWS Certified Solutions Architect)
- Prior consulting experience with healthcare payer organizations
- Familiarity with emerging technologies (e.g., AI, blockchain) and their applications in the payer space
The salary range for this position takes into consideration a variety of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, level of experience, applicable office location, training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The new hire salary range displays the minimum and maximum salary targets for this position across all US locations, and the range has not been adjusted for any specific state differentials. It is not typical for a candidate to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the unique facts and circumstances regarding each candidate. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range for this position is $103,584 to $209,800. Please note that the salary range posted reflects the base salary only and does not include benefits or any potential equity or variable bonus programs.
