LOCATION

This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

GENERAL SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Principal Program Engineer is responsible for the engineering and technical disciplines needed to complete a project. The incumbent oversees multiple initiatives and works to plan projects, establish project criteria, coordinate project reviews, and ensure the proper implementation of project elements. The Principal Program Engineer will schedule, plan, forecast, resource, and manage all the technical activities aimed at assuring project accuracy and quality from conception to completion. The Principal Program Engineer is responsible for the deliverables of the team and for overseeing the work of lower-level engineers and technicians.

The Gas Policy Engineer ensures Consumers Energy's compliance with new and revised gas regulations and supports gas pipeline safety through proactive planning and review. This role holds the authority to interpret regulations, determine implementation programs, and oversee their execution across the business.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain a deep understanding of all regulations affecting Consumers Energy's natural gas operations.
  • Represent the company in trade organizations (e.g., American Gas Association) and communicate pertinent information across the organization, including senior management.
  • Develop and implement strategies to meet regulatory requirements and enhance pipeline safety.
  • Position the company to influence gas rulemaking at the federal and state level
  • Build strong partnerships with business partners and deeply understand their business goals
  • Interact with clients, interpreting their needs and requirements, and representing them in the field
  • Monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications
  • Perform quality control tasks on budgets, schedules, plans, and personnel performance, and report on the project's status
  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate, and monitor the assigned engineering projects. Assign responsibilities and mentor the project team
  • Provide assistance and technical support to project managers and other project participants and collaborate with senior engineers to create more efficient project methods and to maintain the project's profitability
  • Review engineering tasks and deliverables and initiate appropriate and necessary corrective actions
  • Support the Agile project delivery cadence by helping balance team performance with tight deadlines
  • Develop specifications for the project's needed equipment
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent knowledge of design and visualizations software such as AutoCAD
  • Proficient in MS Office, with aptitude for learning new software
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong understanding of GD&T principles
  • Familiarity with rules, regulations, best practices and performance standards
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with 7 or more years of experience as a Program Engineer working on advanced projects

OR

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering (PE) license with 7 or more years of experience as a Program Engineer working on advanced projects
