Primate Keeper (I,II or III)

Job Summary:Animal Keepers are responsible for the welfare, husbandry, enrichment, and training of assigned animals, as well as the maintenance of habitats, behind-the-scenes areas, and public spaces. This position supports Zoo Atlanta’s strategic plan, mission, and values and contributes to the Zoo's animal welfare, research, and conservation efforts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, SKILLS, AND RESPONSIBILITES:
- Responsibilities vary by Keeper level and are assigned accordingly.
- Provide excellent daily care for assigned animals, ensuring their physical and behavioral needs are met.
- Monitor animal health and behavior; report concerns and administer medications as directed.
- Participate in behavioral training and enrichment programs using operant conditioning techniques.
- Complete Zoo-provided animal welfare and behavioral management training.
- Participate in animal welfare assessments and contribute to action items as needed.
- Maintain safe, clean, and enriching environments for animals, staff, and guests.
- Follow and support all area policies, protocols, and safety procedures.
- Interact positively and professionally with guests through scheduled keeper talks and other engagements.
- Write and maintain accurate animal records, daily logs, and reports.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with team members, managers, and veterinary staff.
- Assist with or oversee activities of interns and volunteers.
- Support and engage in department projects and improvement initiatives.
- Use power tools and equipment after proper training.
- Work collaboratively with other zoo departments as needed.
- Must be able and willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Maintain professionalism, punctuality, and reliability in all responsibilities.
- Reduce environmental impact and model conservation practices for guests.
- Must be able to be trained and carry pepper spray and comply with PPE policies.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Core Qualifications
- Experience with operant conditioning and enrichment techniques is required.
- Experience with operant conditioning with primates/vet care is strongly preferred.
- Must have the ability to demonstrate focus, follow written and verbal instructions, effectively promote organization, manage stress to perform the job effectively, remember details, manage time efficiently, apply critical thinking techniques, analyze, and solve problems.
- Must demonstrate computer proficiency to complete the functions of this position.
- Must be able to use light power tools after suitable training.
- Prior primate and/or related exotic animal care experience is required.
- Paid experience at an AZA-accredited facility is preferred.
- Prior primate experience and/or related exotic animal care experience is required.
- A minimum of 3 years of prior, related, paid animal care experience is required.
- Paid experience at an AZA-accredited facility is preferred.
- Prior primate experience and/or related exotic animal care experience is required.
- A minimum of 5 years of prior, related, paid animal care experience is required.
- Paid experience at an AZA-accredited facility is strongly preferred.
EDUCATION:
- Four-year degree in biology, psychology, or related field is preferred; sufficient relevant experience will be considered.
DRIVING REQUIREMENTS:
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license with a safe driving record.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and have the physical ability to perform strenuous work.
