Job summary

CareSource is seeking a Medical Assistant to manage patient flow, collect health information, and prepare patients for examinations in a clinic setting.

The MA will support the care team, perform vital signs, vaccinations, phlebotomy, EKGs, and EMR documentation, while coordinating with nurses and providers to ensure timely care.

Qualifications

• High School or GED required.
• Graduate of an accredited medical assisting program preferred.
• One year of MA experience required; five years preferred.
• Completion of EMT, CNA, or LNA training required.
• Experience in health plan/medical setting preferred.
• Education, training, or experience as an insurance coordinator or medical coder/biller preferred.

Responsibilities

• Optimize patient satisfaction, provider time, and exam room utilization by maintaining patient flow.
• Ensure data, documentation, reports, and forms are available to the provider prior to the visit.
• Document brief history of chief complaint and allergies in the EMR.
• Perform vital signs, necessary screenings, and point-of-care testing; record results in EMR.
• Prepare patient for examination and assist with procedures and chaperoning.
• Assist provider during and after examinations; label and send specimens to lab.
• Administer vaccines, perform phlebotomy, and EKGs.
• Keep exam rooms neat, stocked, and organized; monitor supplies.
• Attend in-service training and team meetings relevant to medical staff.
• Assist patients with discharge, follow-ups, and scheduling; manage paperwork.

Job Summary

The Primary Care Medical Assistant provides care to patients in a clinic setting by managing patient flow through the clinic, obtaining pertinent clinical information including the patient's complaint, health history, and measurement of vital signs, preparing the patient for examination, assisting the provider during the examination and follow up needs. The MA supports the care team in the overall coordination of the member's care by coordinating activities with primary care nurses, primary care team members, and community resources while ensuring accurate and timely documentation of care per company standards.

Essential Functions

• Optimize patient satisfaction, provider time, and exam room utilization by maintaining patient flow, keeping appointments on schedule, reviewing service delivery compared to schedule, and reminding provider of delays.
• Promote efficient patient visits by ensuring all appropriate data, documentation, reports, and forms are available to the provider prior to the visit.
• Document brief history of chief complaint/reason for visit, allergy status, medication reconciliation, and other pertinent information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
• Perform vital signs, necessary screenings, measurements, and point-of-care testing, and record results accurately in the appropriate EMR template.
• Prepare patient for examination by assisting with undressing, gowning, draping, transferring to exam table, and preparing necessary equipment/supplies needed for the exam/procedure.
• Assist provider during and after examinations, including chaperoning, assisting with procedures, interpreting, labeling, and sending specimens to lab, and clearing away instruments.
• Administer vaccines, perform phlebotomy, and EKGs.
• Keep exam rooms neat and stocked with necessary supplies and educational materials, monitoring supply levels and re-ordering as necessary.
• Attend in-service training and team meetings relevant to medical staff and the health center.
• Assist patients after exams as needed, clean, and set up rooms for reuse.
• Perform all point-of-care testing competently in accordance with Joint Commission standards and federal regulations, recording accurately, and informing supervisor immediately of any errors or problems.
• Conduct quality assurance (QA) activities per Joint Commission standards and federal regulations.
• Clean and store all equipment used; promptly report equipment problems to supervisor.
• Assist with patient discharge and check out.
• Follow up with patients who have not attended appointments.
• Assist provider and nurse with paperwork and/or phone calls as assigned.
• Assist with administrative tasks including prior authorizations, specialty appointments, follow-up phone calls, obtaining records, and other tasks as needed.
• Perform any other job-related duties as requested.

Education and Experience

• High School or GED required.
• Graduate of an accredited medical assisting program is preferred.
• One (1) year of experience as a medical assistant in a medical setting or equivalent experience in a similar role is required (five (5) years is preferred).
• Completion of a qualified training program such as EMT, CNA, or LNA is required.
• Experience working in a health plan, medical group, health-related facility, or medical/DME supplier is preferred.
• Education, training, or experience as an insurance coordinator or medical coder/biller is preferred.

Competencies, Knowledge, and Skills

• Familiarity with and ability to use an Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
• Effective communication skills.
• Demonstrated cultural competence and empathy.
• Ability to use online training platforms.
• Ability to review welcome packets and obtain consent forms, including Release of Information, and attach them to EMR.
• Ability to learn multiple workflows and perform them consistently, such as referral to specialists.
• Willingness to learn and utilize telehealth technologies (video, chat, etc.) when appropriate.
• English speaking required with bilingual Spanish preferred.
• Knowledge of the CCA Model of Care preferred.

Licensure and Certification

• Certified or Registered Medical Assistant is preferred.
• Certified Phlebotomy Technician is preferred.

Vaccination Requirement

To help protect our employees, members, and the communities we serve from acquiring communicable diseases, influenza vaccination is a requirement of this position. CareSource requires annual proof of influenza vaccination for designated positions during influenza season (October 1 – March 31) as a condition of continued employment. Employees hired during influenza season will have thirty (30) days from their hire date to complete the required vaccination and have record of immunization verified.

Working Conditions

General office environment; may be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Standard office equipment and familiarity with standard medical equipment. Travel is not typically required.

Compensation

Compensation range: $35,900.00 – $57,300.00. In addition to base compensation, you may qualify for a bonus tied to company and individual performance.
