SUMMARY: Barnes & Thornburg's pricing team is responsible for partnering with firm leadership, attorneys, and other personnel to develop and manage hourly and non-hourly matters and install scalable data capture processes to meet the needs of client business objectives. The Pricing Manager reports to the firm’s Director of Pricing and supports a variety of the firm's strategic initiatives. Functionally, the Pricing Manager will support the pricing team by managing its portfolio of matters for a large number of clients by actively managing tasks and deadlines, analyzing and tracking matter progress, preparing client ready reports, and facilitating consistent communication across the engagement teams. The Pricing Manager will be jointly responsible for leading the creation and adoption of pricing best practices.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide counsel and support to lawyers and other firm personnel in developing matter and client pricing proposals / alternative fee arrangements, matter budgets, and profitability efforts. This task includes matter scoping and project management of matters priced by the individual.
  • Work with the Client Growth and Proposal teams on client pitches, proposals, and RFP responses to competitively price our legal work based on best practices.
  • Assist with the administration of the firm’s matter pricing and project management technologies, including Power BI, Clocktimizer, Cosine Matter Planning, SharePoint, and Contract Express.
  • Support the pricing team in internal and client-facing reporting. This task includes supporting ongoing reporting-improvement initiatives, such as exploring new business intelligence technologies, and working closely with the pricing and financial reporting and analysis teams, as needed.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Pricing, assist with the project management of the pricing team’s budget and alternative fee arrangement portfolio and in the development and maintenance of scalable project management processes.
  • Assist in the development of training programs related to pricing, scoping, and alternative fee arrangements.
  • Assist with the establishment and execution of strategic priorities in conjunction with the Director of Pricing and the pricing team.
  • Provide market insight, competitive intelligence, and innovative thinking on pricing strategies.
  • Assist with the deployment of new technology as needed.
  • Assess and analyze internal data and convert findings into actionable, concise reports that establish or affirm firm priorities.
  • Improve data integrity to help drive effective decision making. Use data visualization tools such as Power BI to empower leadership to efficiently and effectively make decisions.
  • Provide support in response to ad-hoc requests from firm attorneys and leadership.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of statistical, financial, and accounting principles normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of legal pricing experience within a law firm, including matter planning and pricing experience.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce and present succinct reports, analyses, proposals, recommendations, and demonstrations to firm stakeholders.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint. Expert fluency in Excel is preferred (pivot tables, v-lookups, embedded formulas, etc.).
  • Proactive with strong time management and organizational skills. This position will require the coordination of multiple matter pricing projects and firmwide initiatives simultaneously and prioritize of workload is critical.
  • Strong analytical, evaluative, and critical thinking skills, and to effectively communicate findings to attorneys and firm management in a clear and concise manner.
  • Possess a demonstrated understanding of both the practice and the business of law and independently identify new areas of opportunity to help solve business challenges.
  • Demonstrated experience managing hourly and alternative fee arrangements.
  • Demonstrated the ability to lead and collaborate with members of other staff departments.

CHICAGO APPLICANTSALARY RANGE: $115,000 - $175,000

Salary will be commensurate with experience in this role.

Performance-based bonus eligible.
