Job description

Position Overview

Learning Specialist – teaching mild and moderate learning disabilities to students in grades 6–12 at the Preuss School, UC San Diego. The role involves planning, implementing, and evaluating individualized education plans (IEPs) for special education scholars and collaborating with general education staff and parents to support student progress.

Responsibilities
  • Work under the supervision of the Principal to deliver quality services to special education scholars from grades six through twelve.
  • Participate as part of the team in planning and implementing student programs, including special instruction, co‑teaching, tutorial assistance, and consultation with general education staff.
  • Plan, organize, control, and direct a variety of programs, projects, and activities related to the Special Education program at The Preuss School.
  • Prepare student education plans in consultation with parents and IEP team members, act as coordinator of IEP implementation with general education staff, and monitor student progress.
  • Participate in review and revision of IEPs as appropriate; design individual and small‑group instruction that parallels the general education curriculum.
  • Assist other professional staff in diagnosing learning disorders, developing planned remediation, and evaluating student progress.
  • Maintain accurate special education records and logs for each scholar; collaborate with fellow teachers on planning, professional development, standards‑based curriculum, and common assessment to improve instruction.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations governing Special Education, coordinate the program with the school’s Advisory Committee, related agencies, and the Special Education Local Plan Area rule, and administer state and district standardized tests according to school testing programs.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Current Education Specialist Instruction Credential (Mild/Moderate) or equivalent teaching credential from another U.S. state.
  • English Learner (ELA/ELAS/CLAD/BCLAD equivalent), or Cross‑Cultural, Language and Academic Development (CLAD) Certificate, or equivalent out‑of‑state authorization.
  • Minimum of one year teaching as a Learning Specialist for mild/moderate learning cases.
  • Minimum of one year teaching experience with underserved students.
