Job Summary

Performs inspections of industrial and commercial establishments to assure compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations. Performs various Public Works Department customer service-related duties.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

• Performs industrial and commercial inspections. Completes inspection reports.
• Responds to industrial and commercial user questions and permit requirements.
• Collects water/wastewater samples, prepares for laboratory analysis. Performs a wide variety of analyses of water and wastewater.
• Maintains records as required.
• Issues notification of non-compliance including setting time limits for compliance.
• Disseminates information on types of pretreatment and other methods of compliance.
• Investigates complaints.
• Delivers exceptional customer service while managing compliance for Industrial Pretreatment, Fats, Oil and Grease (FOG) program, backflow prevention and stormwater pollution prevention.
• Performs duties in a safe and orderly manner, complying with all City and department safety rules.
• Utilize sample equipment and field equipment.
• Prepare reports accurately and timely.
• Performs all other job-related duties as assigned or as become apparent.
• Presents a courteous and professional manner in all public interactions.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a standard office environment and throughout the city at utility treatment facilities and work sites. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, noxious fumes and odors, electrical and traffic hazards, and inclement weather conditions. May be required to work in confined spaces, climb in and out of trenches, and lift and move objects weighing up to 75 pounds. Fine manipulation with hands and fingers to prepare samples.

Required Qualifications

• Associate's degree in a related field OR High School Diploma/GED and three (3) years of related experience.
• Valid Texas Driver's License.
• One (1) year experience in sample collection/analysis.
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations in industrial pretreatment, fats, oil and grease, backflow, and stormwater compliance.
• Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
• Knowledge of graphics, dimensional drawings, and plumbing details. Knowledge of computers and software programs.
• Mathematical computation used to figure biological formulas and interpret analysis of water and wastewater samples.
• Reading and interpreting work orders and equipment manuals.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with staff, agencies, and the public.
• Effective organization, prioritization, and deadline management.
• Ability to follow instructions and maintain professional relationships.

Preferred Skills

• Class C Wastewater Certification.
• Certified Stormwater Inspector Certification.

Experience substitution

Three (3) years of experience in wastewater pretreatment or stormwater compliance may be substituted for the Class C Certification or Certified Stormwater Inspector Certification.
