PURPOSE:

An effective press operator holds safety as a value. Demonstrates safe work practices in all they do and has no hesitation notifying anyone of an unsafe situation. The press operator is responsible for operating and cleaning molding presses to produce quality parts. This role involves using a variety of hand tools and requires the operation of robotic unloaders, hand carts and pallet jacks. The operator will maintain accurate press logs and adheres to our quality plans.

1.0 DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Safety: Follows all company safety guidelines, practices, and procedures. This includes the proper use of personal protective equipment when required. Actively participate in safety culture initiatives, reporting unsafe conditions to your supervisor or group lead.
  • Press Operation: Operate multiple molding press machines including start up and shut down procedures, adjusting press settings and heat controls as per production specifications, including the compression presses. Monitor press operations to ensure optimal performance and part quality. Make necessary adjustments to press settings to ensure parts meet quality standards.
  • Total Productive Maintenance (TPM): Perform TPM duties, as assigned. Those duties are best described as those tasks required to clean, inspect, and lubricate the equipment and work area. Refer to the work center specific work instructions for guidance. General characteristics of TPM Duties are as follows:
    • Take 5 minutes or less
    • Require 2 tools of less
    • Are performed daily, weekly, or monthly
    • Are identified in the OEM Manual as an Operations Requirement
    • Tasks that are generally accessible
  • Tool Use: Utilize various tools, including drills, hammers, picks, pry bars, and putty knives to perform tasks such as material removal from the sprue holes inside the hot molds. Clean the inside of hot molds with dry ice at scheduled intervals as needed with tools provided. Safely and efficiently handle and maintain tools to ensure proper operation during the molding process.
  • Press Logs and Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date press logs, including press settings, adjustments made, cycle times, and materials formulations used. Record and report any deviations from quality standards or press performance issues. Ability to identify and correct press problems that may occur.
  • Continuous Improvement (CI): Identify and propose CI ideas to enhance equipment performance, reduce costs, and improve safety and efficiency.
  • Heat Layouts and Quality Plans: Read and interpret heat layouts, quality plans, and other technical documents to ensure compliance with production requirements. Ensure that products meet quality specifications by conducting inspections using a pin gauge or other items necessary to measure the product. Notify your supervisor if products are out of specifications.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including maintenance, mixer, and processing, to ensure seamless integration of overall product development.
  • Secondary Responsibilities:
    • Robotic Unloader: Troubleshoot robotic systems and communicate with supervisor and maintenance personnel for repairs and adjustments.
    • Support and Training: Provide support and training to other team members, fostering knowledge sharing and skill development.
    • Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or group lead.

3.0 EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience in molding press operation or a related field preferred.
  • Familiarity with press settings and use of hand tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
4.0 PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, climb, use hands to feel or handle objects, tools, or controls;
  • Reach and lift with hands and arms; talk, see and hear
  • Ability to drill out the sprue holes inside of molds for extended periods of time
  • Associate will work in a factory setting and walk between presses for long periods of time.
  • Associate must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to lift and move baskets of parts and boxes of bulk molding using handcarts, and pallet jack.
  • Required to perform repetitive tasks
  • The associate may need to be available for extended shift hours if needed and assist in emergency situations

5.0 WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The associate will occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. Due to the open environment of the building, must be able to work in various temperatures. Involves moderate or occasional presence of unfavorable conditions, i.e., cold, dust, heat, noise, odor, chemicals, etc. Safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, heat protective sleeves, and safety shoes may be required in the area that you are working based on our safety PPE standards.
