Job Summary:
The Press Operator 1 is responsible for setting up, adjusting, operating, and maintaining single or multi-color offset presses to produce high-quality printed materials. This includes printing single-color, two-color, and multi-color jobs involving solids, tints, lines, halftones, and critical color matches. The operator interprets job specifications to determine press setup requirements, such as sheet-wise or work-and-turn impositions. Responsibilities include performing make-ready tasks, installing plates or cylinders, adjusting tension, prepping blankets, checking for imperfections, and ensuring accurate image positioning.
The role involves executing press adjustments and color corrections to meet production standards, maintaining press functionality through regular cleaning and lubrication, and performing minor repairs or part replacements as needed. The Press Operator 1 also follows manufacturer-recommended maintenance schedules to ensure consistent performance and product quality.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate single or multi-color offset printing presses according to job specifications.
- Review and interpret job orders to determine press setup, including sheet orientation and color requirements.
- Perform make-ready activities such as hanging plates, installing cylinders, prepping blankets, and adjusting tension and registration.
- Inspect plates and cylinders for defects, ensuring accurate image alignment and quality output.
- Execute color corrections and press adjustments to meet print quality standards prior to and during production.
- Monitor press operation to detect malfunctions, ensuring consistent output and minimal downtime.
- Clean, lubricate, and maintain press equipment regularly to ensure optimal performance.
- Perform minor repairs and replace worn or broken parts as necessary.
- Follow manufacturer-recommended maintenance schedules and document service activities.
Basic Qualifications:
- Education equivalent to 8th grade plus additional classes.
- 2 to 4 years of specific vocational training or related experience in offset printing operations.
- Ability to apply common sense reasoning and solve practical problems using written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions.
- Proficient in performing arithmetic operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages.
- Knowledge of offset printing procedures, materials, equipment, and safety standards.
- Ability to read and understand job specifications to determine proper press setup and materials.
- Skilled in operating and making corrective adjustments to printing presses and related equipment.
- Familiarity with micrometers and ability to align printing plates with precision.
- Capable of performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on press equipment.
Physical Requirements- Medium strength demand: Must be able to lift and carry 20 to 50 pounds occasionally, and 10 to 20 pounds frequently.
- Frequent physical activities including reaching, standing, handling, fingering, and reaching upwards for 1/3 to 2/3 of the time.
- Occasional activities such as walking, stooping, crouching, talking, and accommodation—typically required up to 1/3 of the time.
- Good vision requirements, including near acuity, far acuity, depth perception, and color vision, all needed frequently for quality control and precision alignment.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers for operating equipment, adjusting, and handling materials with precision.
- Noise exposure: Must be able to tolerate a very loud work environment.
- Occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions and proximity to moving parts.
