Job description

Summary

Instruct preschool-aged children in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth needed for primary school in preschool, daycare center, or other child development facilities. May require State certification.

Duties
  • Provide a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate, and use, both in learning activities and imaginative play.
  • Attend to children's basic needs by feeding, dressing, and changing diapers.
  • Teach basic skills such as color, shape, number, and letter recognition, personal hygiene, and social skills.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order.
  • Read books to classes or small groups.
  • Organize and lead activities promoting physical, mental, and social development, including games, arts and crafts, music, storytelling, and field trips.
  • Observe and evaluate children's performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  • Identify children with emotional, developmental, or health-related issues and discuss with supervisors, parents, or specialists.
  • Meet with parents to discuss children's progress, needs, and ways to promote learning.
  • Enforce policies and rules governing students.
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for activities.
  • Teach proper eating habits and personal hygiene.
  • Serve meals and snacks following nutritional guidelines.
  • Help children adapt to the school environment, greet them, assist with outerwear, and select engaging activities.
  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet diverse needs and interests.
  • Set and communicate clear objectives for lessons and projects.
  • Demonstrate activities to children.
  • Arrange indoor and outdoor spaces for safe and creative play and motor activities.
  • Maintain accurate student records as required by laws and policies.
  • Prepare reports on students and activities.
  • Plan and conduct balanced instructional activities, demonstrations, and work periods encouraging observation, questioning, and investigation.
  • Organize and display student work appropriately.
  • Attend professional meetings, workshops, and conferences for professional development.
  • Collaborate with staff to plan, evaluate, and revise preschool programs.
  • Supervise and evaluate teacher assistants and volunteers.
  • Participate in staff meetings and committees.
  • Discuss individual student needs and progress with other professionals.
  • Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, and experiential activities.
  • Manage classroom equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Assist students with disabilities using assistive devices and accessible facilities.
  • Perform administrative duties like monitoring hall, cafeteria, and bus activities.
  • Administer developmental and educational assessments.
  • Prepare and implement remedial programs for students needing extra support.
