Preschool Substitute and Afternoon Teacher (FT, 9:30 am - 6:00 pm)

Children’s Day School (CDS) is a co-educational preschool through eighth grade serving over 460 students in the Mission Dolores neighborhood of San Francisco. Reporting to the ECP Afternoon Manager and Early Childhood Program Director, the Preschool Sub and Afternoon Teacher is responsible for helping lead the afternoon and camp teachers in providing an excellent, developmentally appropriate preschool program for 3 - 5-year-olds, and supporting the Preschool Extended Program Manager to close the afternoon program for the day. During the school day, the Preschool Substitute/Afternoon Teacher will cover classes in the ECP as a substitute teacher or support in a floater role when not needed as a sub.

Responsibilities

• Cover classes and keep track of communications and dates you are booked as a substitute teacher, and support in classrooms when needed.
• On days when coverage isn’t needed, keep a list of projects or ways to assist on campus. This may look like, but is not limited to, pushing in to support classroom projects or student behaviors, covering classroom teachers for parent meetings, helping maintain the preschool environment, cleaning and organizing outdoor areas and storage, lost and found, or checking in with members of the faculty to find areas of need.
• Liaising with the ECP Director and Afternoon Manager to prioritize the greatest needs
• Participate in school-wide professional development
• Attend necessary faculty meetings as available
• Support the transition to the Afternoon Program
• Team: Collaborate, problem-solve, and communicate with teaching team members and the Manager, and contribute to the team by keeping track of the schedule and transitions for the day.
• Curriculum: Assist in planning and implementing an exciting, challenging, child-centered, and developmentally appropriate preschool curriculum for the afternoon and camp programs.
• Children: Encourage children to take the initiative to solve problems and pursue their own educational interests. Help children think, investigate, and ask questions as part of the educational process. Strive to meet each child’s individual needs.
• Families: Support a physically and emotionally safe environment that nurtures and facilitates the development of both children and families. Collaborate with families toward their child’s success.

• Apply an understanding of the developmental stages of children when observing and working with individual children.

• Display excellent rapport with children and families and channel difficult communications through the ECP Coordinator or ECP Director.

• Keep the classroom, storage areas, bathrooms, and outside areas neat and orderly.
• Work effectively with children, families, and staff of diverse backgrounds and family structures.
• Be proficient in technology: email, word processing, photos, etc.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will:

• Have or be working on a degree in early childhood education or a related field.
• Have at least 24 units in Early Childhood Education (ECE)/Child Development
• Have experience working with 3 - 5-year-olds.
• Be able to lift 40 lbs (the weight of the average preschooler)

Schedule: Monday-Friday 9:30 am - 6 pm. Available to work during the school year and during school breaks, and at camps.

Compensation: The hourly rate will be $29 - $31 per hour (based on our established salary scale). Excellent benefits are offered, including medical, dental, vision insurance, paid time off, tuition remission, education reimbursement, professional development, and retirement plan..
