Job summary

Unalaska City School District seeks an Early Childhood/General Assistant to support teachers and students in a classroom setting. You will prepare activities, assist small groups, and help with routine tasks to maintain an organized learning environment.

Responsibilities include attendance records, classroom displays, library support, and supervising during lunch and field trips. Bilingual Yup’ik and English are preferred, and willingness to work in rural Alaska is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience with young people in a school setting desirable.
• Bilingual Yup’ik and English preferred.
• Willingness to live and work in a cross-cultural rural Alaskan environment.
• Ability to carry out the described duties.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision of the teacher, prepares for classroom activities.
• Works with a small group of students to reinforce material introduced by the teacher.
• Assists individual students needing special attention.
• Sets up and operates equipment.
• Assists with non-instructional classroom duties (snack, restroom, clothing routines).
• Assists with reading and storytelling.
• Assists small group of students in the library.
• Participates in in-service training programs.
• Checks and records student attendance.
• Keeps bulletin boards and classroom displays up to date.
• Assists with supervising students during lunch, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
• Alerts the teacher to problems or information about individual students.
• Maintains confidentiality and ethical behavior regarding students and staff.
• Maintains responsibility and positive attitude toward students and staff.
• Shows initiative in sharing work with other instructional personnel.
• Maintains classroom student records and folders.
• Records students' data and reports progress to the teacher.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Works individually with children.
• Keeps necessary scores and daily achievement records.
• Receives in-service training from Early Childhood Education Specialist.
