New Leaf Community Markets in Half Moon Bay is seeking a Prepared Foods Assistant Manager to supervise the department and its staff while upholding our mission and values.

You will partner with the Prepared Foods Manager to ensure food safety, scheduling, and coaching, while maintaining inventory accuracy, displays, and customer service excellence for our community customers.

Qualifications

• Previous food service, retail or grocery management experience required.
• Knowledge of retail grocery Prepared Foods, Deli or food production department is helpful.
• Entry to mid-level computer proficiency; Excel and inventory software preferred.
• Able to manage labor, sales and profit margins.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the Prepared Foods department and staff, including scheduling and coaching.
• Ensure department conditions adhere to merchandising standards and food safety policies.
• Maintain inventory levels and manage stock rotation and displays.
• Plan for weekly ads, events and holidays with the manager.
• Provide excellent customer service and staff product knowledge.

Summary

Partners with Department Manager to manage department and staff, including financial stewardship, customer service, department conditions, merchandising, food safety, work safety, communication, hiring, training and performance management. This is a management position, and is responsible for providing leadership in line with company values and promoting a positive and progressive work environment in alignment with our company mission, vision values and policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

General Requirements:

Position Responsibilities:

• Partners with Prepared Foods Manager in management and providing oversight to all areas of the department. Assists in management of all department staff, including review writing, scheduling and providing ongoing coaching, development and feedback. Assesses, prioritizes and delegates tasks and production.
• Ensures consistency of department conditions. Ensures all areas of department are stocked, rotated, faced and adhere to merchandising standards and category schematics.
• Partners with department manager to ensure satisfactory in-stock conditions in department.Maintains appropriate inventory levels to achieve sales and margin goals.
• Orders Prepared Foods products according to anticipated sales and seasonal needs. Trains staff to write orders and production schedules consistent with department goals and standards to ensure the highest level of product availability.
• Builds displays and arranges department products to make attractive presentations, highlighting featured/unique/seasonal items.
• Partners with department manager to plan for weekly ads, events and holidays using tools and reports.
• Develops and maintains teamwork among all members of the team.
• Ensures customer special orders are accurately placed and delivered.
• Receives and unloads merchandise; checks quality, count and condition. Communicates any issues to management and merchandising team.
• Stocks and rotates products with attention to product quality and expiration dates.
• Maintains the organization, rotation and cleanliness of back stock areas.
• Assists customers with product selection.Shares product knowledge with customers.Makes recommendations and suggestions based on customer needs.
• Wraps, weighs and prices products according to department policy.
• Processes customers’ made-to-order items accurately and expeditiously.
• Assists with food preparation and production.
• Partners with department manager to plan, lead and analyze the monthly perishable inventory.
• Demonstrates and shares a solid knowledge of products in the store and industry trends with a general understanding of culinary terminology, product labelling and common dietary restrictions.
• Demonstrates a solid understanding of labor, sales and margin goals and factors that influence them.Works with department manager to meet labor and margin goals and schedule department accordingly. Develops and executes a plan when results do not meet expectations.
• Coaches department to maintain appropriate, accurate and organized inventory and back stock.Handles damaged and spoiled product according to company policy.
• Maintains a working knowledge of department equipment and is able to train staff and troubleshoot errors as needed.
• Leverages resources and labor to maximize efficiency, without compromising quality and service standards.
• Balances administrative tasks with presence on floor.
• Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

• Previous food service, retail or grocery management experience required.
• Knowledge of retail grocery Prepared Foods, Deli or food production department and / or similar restaurant, café or food industry experience required.
• Entry to mid-level computer proficiency required. Experience with Excel and inventory software preferred.
• Skills to manage financial results, including labor, sales and profit margin.

Language Skills

Excellent written and verbal communication skills required .

Mathematical Skills

Basic to intermediate math and computation skills required.

Reasoning Ability

Skills to read, understand and follow through on verbal and written instructions. Skills to exercise good judgment at all times. Skills to resolve conflicts and analyze a variety of situations to find a solution.

Physical Demands

This position works at a Medium level. Required frequently and up to continuously to be on feet with a mix of standing and walking throughout shift. Sitting seldom required. Up to occasionally, dependent on location, required to climb stairs, step stool and /or ladders. Continuously required to: lift 1-10 pounds; push/pull 1-10 pounds; use arms, hands and wrists; grasping/squeezing. Frequently required to: lift 11-20 pounds; twist; reach at/above shoulder ; reach below shoulder. Occasionally required to: carry 21-50 pounds; push/pull 11-40 pounds; bend/stoop; crouch/squat; reach at/above shoulder.

This position may be required to use the following tools and equipment: box knife, baler, scanner, hand truck, POS, conveyer belt, industrial kitchen equipment (i.e. blast chiller, grill, knives/blades, oven, grills, scales, etc.), basic housekeeping / janitorial and standard office equipment.

Work occurs in a grocery store environment which includes surfaces that can be wet and slippery, moderate noise level, and temperature extremes in controlled environments in the cooler and freezer, and depending on location, working outside in all temperatures. There may be exposure to certain allergens and / or chemicals.
