Job summary

The Medical University of South Carolina is seeking a Prenatal Genetic Counselor to analyze medical and family histories, construct pedigrees, and guide patients through genetic testing options with clear explanations of risks and benefits.

You will coordinate testing, return results, provide education and psychosocial support, review referrals, and help operate the genetics clinic while collaborating with physicians and trainees.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from an ACGC-accredited program.
• Board certification by ABGC or ABGC board-eligible at time of hire with certification within one year.
• South Carolina Genetic Counselor Licensure or eligibility (limited licensure may be obtained).

Responsibilities

• Elicit medical history and construct pedigree to assess risk for genetic disease occurrence or recurrence.
• Explain available testing options, including risks, benefits and limitations of testing.
• Coordinate genetic testing and return of results for patients and/or families.
• Provide genetic education, counseling, and psychosocial support for patients and families.
• Review referrals and triages cases; support operations of genetics clinic.
• Perform administrative and day-to-day operational clinical activities including record review and patient charting.
• Write detailed consultation reports conveying complex genetic concepts to patients and referring physicians.
• Collaborate with genetic counseling team, MD supervisor(s) and multidisciplinary care team; mentor new genetic counselor hires.
