Job summary

University of Vienna is seeking a University Assistant (Praedoc) to join the Faculty of Mathematics and contribute to Mathematical Data Science research. You will work with the research team around Univ.-Prof. Dr.

Philipp Grohs, focusing on Numerics, Functional Analysis, Stochastic Analysis, or Statistics, and bring strong programming experience to bear. The position starts 1 September 2026 or later for a duration of four years, with an all-in gross salary under 48 VwGr.

Qualifications

• Completed diploma or master's in mathematics or related field before contract starts.
• Experience in scientific writing and research methods.
• High scientific qualification in numerical methods and scientific computing.
• Didactic skills and qualification as well as experience in e-learning.
• Excellent programming skills and their applications in Python, Julia or C++.
• Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken.
• You are a team player with high social and communication skills.
• You are goal-oriented and have a high motivation to strive for scientific excellence.

Responsibilities

• Collaboration and research in the field of Mathematical Data Sciences: Development of own solutions as part of the research group of Prof. Grohs.
• Conclusion of a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months is expected.
• Membership in the Vienna School of Mathematics and active participation in its activities will be required.
• Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Willingness to participate in international and interdisciplinary research with applied researchers.
• Collaboration in teaching and administration: Independent participation in the administration of the institute, teaching and research. Independent participation in and teaching of courses in accordance with the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
