Job description

Position Overview

The Christman Company is looking for a Preconstruction Manager in its Michigan regional offices (Grand Rapids, Lansing or Detroit).

As a Preconstruction Manager, you will work closely with the Vice President of Preconstruction to assist in managing the regional preconstruction department, focusing on allocating resources, project strategies, and maintaining a high‑performance team. You will lead specific project assignments, develop long‑term relationships with project stakeholders, and ensure successful project outcomes and client satisfaction.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for preconstruction deliverables to clients.
  • Develops a strategy for each assigned project.
  • Provides support to business sales, team sales, and presentations.
  • Risk management – ensures sound financial deals and drives cost leadership.
  • Oversees and prepares estimates for projects at all stages, ensuring accuracy.
  • Maintains an up‑to‑date costing database with labor and material updates.
  • Oversees the value‑added process for each project and leads preparation of guaranteed maximum prices to closure.
  • Directs, reviews, and approves the work of Estimating Engineers, Conceptual Estimators, and Senior Estimators.
  • Drives deadlines and achieves results.
  • Ensures client satisfaction during preconstruction.
  • Attends sales presentations and markets work to existing clients.
  • Enforces and supports project planning and scheduling with other teams.
  • Ensures subcontractor involvement in pricing and supports the operations team during subcontractor negotiations.
  • Continuously develops staff by mentoring, leading, motivating and coaching on ethics, diversity, quality, development and safety.
  • Manages successful client relationships.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering, Business, Finance, or a related field.
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience in construction or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to delegate tasks, motivate colleagues and manage stakeholder priorities in a deadline‑oriented environment.
  • Ability to recognize new problems, evaluate alternatives and find solutions using a systematic, multi‑step approach.
  • Ability to build a sense of belonging and ownership, assemble diverse teams, coach and motivate members, delegate responsibility and promote mutual support.
  • Ability to make decisions while analyzing risks and future impacts, and to know when to elevate issues to higher levels.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and cannot be currently under a sponsor visa.
