fab2 in Austin, TX is seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to design, prototype, and build the mechanical systems in our semiconductor fabrication equipment.

You will push precision to sub-micron levels, lead cross‑team integration, and iterate quickly from concept to working hardware. A portfolio of built projects is often required to demonstrate hands‑on capability and rapid prototyping success.

Qualifications

• Requires 3+ years designing and building precision mechanical systems achieving high accuracy.
• Strong fundamentals in exact-constraint design, kinematic couplings, flexures, and tolerance analysis.
• Hands-on prototyping, fabrication, assembly, and alignment experience with mills, granite plates, and interferometers.
• Experience selecting and integrating precision components (bearings, stages, encoders, isolators, actuators).
• Familiarity with dimensional metrology such as interferometry, LVDTs, capacitive probes, autocollimators, and CMMs.

Responsibilities

• Design and iterate on precision machines, motion stages, frames, mounts, fixtures, and inspection tooling.
• Lead mechanical system integration and cross-team coordination with electrical, controls, and optics engineers.
• Drive mechanical design of frames, stages, and assemblies with GD&T and tolerance analysis.
• Rapidly prototype, build and characterize new designs on the bench.
• Select and integrate precision components: bearings, encoders, actuators, isolators, dampers.
• Develop error budgets and identify dominant error sources (thermal, vibrational, structural, kinematic).
