Job summary

United Launch Alliance in Decatur, AL is seeking an experienced Precision Measurement Inspector to perform alignment and inspection of large flight hardware using laser trackers, Faro Arms, and CMM tools. You will review drawings for DFMA, support tooling design, and ensure GD&T conformance.

This role includes weekend shifts (Fri-Sun) with overtime after training, a 9/80-style schedule for many salaried team members, and opportunities to grow in a team-driven, technology-forward environment.

  • Desire to support the efforts of the team including working in multiple areas and overtime as needed to get the job done.
  • Physical requirements that include no limitations regarding working, climbing, crawling, lifting, bending, and performing precision measurements in an industrial environment.
  • The ability and willingness to take ownership of work activities and ensure they are completed accurately, efficiently, and in a timely manner with minimal oversight/direction.
  • Ability to interface and work effectively with various functional groups/organizations.
  • Display high levels of interpersonal communication skills with the ability to accurately interpret messages from others and respond appropriately and professionally.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Experience in the recording and manipulation of data in Excel

Responsibilities

  • Performs precision measurement of large structural flight hardware using laser trackers, laser scanners, and Faro Arms.
  • Examines engineering drawings for DFMA and tooling design review and approval.
  • Produces production dimensional inspection and assembly of large structural hardware and tooling; leads tool design review and approval.
  • Applies GD&T to ensure product acceptance and confirms drawing formats match model details.
  • Participates in concurrent engineering to ensure manufacturability of new designs.
  • Provides data-driven input for fabrication, assembly, and installation; coordinates with affected organizations.
  • Delivers validation and technical guidance to improve products and manufacturing operations.
  • Offers troubleshooting support and corrective actions.
  • Weekend shifts on Friday–Sunday with overtime after training; training is Monday to Friday for several months.

Job Overview & Responsibilities
  • Performs a variety of tasks that include precision measurement of large structural flight hardware utilizing laser trackers, laser scanners, and Faro Arms. Examining engineering drawings and related documents for soundness, efficiency, and design for manufacturing (DFMA), as well as tooling design review and approval.
  • Performs a variety of tasks that include production dimensional inspection and assembly of large structural flight hardware and tooling, tool design review and approval, tool inspection, inspection and control of method of acceptance tooling, and machine qualification support.
  • Application of geometric dimensioning and tolerance (GD&T)to ensure product acceptance. Assure drawing to model interrogation by confirming the drawing format conforms to detail/assembly views.
  • Verify design to design/drafting standards; coordinate drawing requirements to design based upon design specification and design for manufacturing.
  • Participates and/or leads concurrent engineering activities to ensure design for manufacturability on new designs of large, machined components.
  • Provide input to fabrication, assembly, and installation based on application/analysis of technically deriveddata. Assists in development ofbasic data for design proposals, as well as coordinates with other organizations affected by design development.
  • Provide validation and technical guidance to improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations through improved procedural control of command media documents.
  • Provide technical assistance/troubleshooting to support cause and corrective action.
  • This role will be supoorting the weekend shifts, primary days will be Friday-Sunday with additional time during the week as needed. Overtime will be available when training is complete. Training will be M-F for several months until able to conduct operations individually.

Preferred Qualifications
  • CNC Machining background
  • Knowledge of precision measurement equipment and processes (e.g. laser trackers, probing, CMM, etc)
  • Experience using any type of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software
  • Two years of applied experience performing Precision Measurement activity while working in a manufacturing environment
  • Work experience with interpretation of precision measurement results and application to precision manufacturing
  • Experience in the analysis and development of measurement strategies to obtain objective data based on drawing requirements
  • Demonstrated competence in using laser trackers to perform precision measurement
  • Demonstrated higher level use of Excel to establish data collection & analysis (e.g. Pivot Tables, Formulas, etc.)
  • Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T) experience and/or certification
  • Demonstrated use of Spatial Analyzer Software
  • Experience with Model Based Definition (MBD) drawings/models
