Job summary

ANDRITZ in Torrington, Connecticut, USA seeks a Grinder Operator (union, hourly) to operate a grinder and ensure customer specifications are met. The role involves reading work orders, selecting wheels, and performing wheel changes while maintaining safety and quality on a 12‑hour shift.

You will use precision measuring tools, document daily activities, plan workloads, and maintain equipment with routine maintenance.

Qualifications

• Must have 3–5 years of manual machining experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Ability to read and use tape measures, calipers and micrometers.
• Familiarity with run-out, taper, surface finish, tolerance and blueprint reading.
• Computer skills for communication and work creation purposes.
• Good mechanical aptitude and experience with powered hand tools.
• Some knowledge of hydraulics helpful.
• Experience using lift trucks and overhead cranes desired.
• Must be able to lift 50–60 lbs. and work up to 12 hour shift on concrete floor.
• Ability to train for operation of all machines.

Responsibilities

• Operate grinding machine (30” wheel). Select grinding wheels according to metal properties.
• Grind roll up to 2,000mm dia., 14,000mm length.
• Organize, plan and prioritize work.
• Read work orders and production schedules to determine specifications.
• Perform wheel changes.
• Mount wheels to hub.
• Make roll measurements and roll track measurements.
• Use and maintain a variety of precision measuring/inspection equipment.
• Make hardness and smoothness checks.
• Select drivers and shoes for job.
• Perform daily machine/equipment maintenance including routine oil and filter changes and greasing machine and maintain equipment service records.
• Attention to detail and good work ethic.
• Complete daily paperwork.
• Follow good housekeeping practice, keep area clean and organized.
