Job description

The Teacher Assistant is responsible for assisting with classroom activities, contributing to lesson planning, providing instruction, pursuing individual IEPs, assisting in activity planning, maintaining records, and participating in agency activities.

Core Responsibilities

  • Assist in coordinating classroom activities and act as a backup in the teacher's absence.
  • Contribute to lesson planning and provide instruction under the teacher’s guidance.
  • Implement students' IEPs, lesson, and behavior plans.
  • Help plan and execute classroom activities.
  • Maintain accurate records and charts, ensuring effective communication.
  • Promote student safety and well-being using written and verbal procedures and safety equipment.
  • Attend to students' personal and self-care needs they cannot perform independently.
  • Notify the nursing team of medical and dietary concerns.
  • Assist students in developing behavioral, social, hygiene, and money management skills for independence.
  • Complete and maintain First Aid, CPR, and other required certifications.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Possess one of the following:
  • Valid NYS Teaching Assistant Level I certification or documentation verifying requirements submitted to NYSED.
  • Valid NYS classroom teacher’s certificate.
  • Maintain valid Level I Teacher Assistant Certification.
